Postdoc: Formation, characterisation and exploitation of covalently bonded porphyrin nanostructures
At Dublin City University, School of Physical Sciences, Surfaces and Interfaces Field(s): nanotechnology Application deadline: Sep 13 (Mon), 2010 Submitted: Sep 13, 2010 Contact: Tony Cafolla E-mail: cafollaa@dcu.ie Phone: +353 1 7005332 Fax: +353 1 7005384 Address: School of Physical Sciences, Dublin City University, Glasnevin, Dublin 9 Ireland Job description: Duties:
Applications are invited for the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded position of Postdoctoral Researcher, based in the School of Physical Sciences, Dublin City University. Applicants must hold a PhD degree in surface physics, condensed matter physics, chemical physics or material science. The successful candidate should have the capability to work independently and should have a good knowledge of UHV vacuum techniques and research experience in one of the following areas: surface science, scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. S/He will be active in the day-to-day management of the surface science laboratory, in the preparation of publications and presentations for conferences. Moreover, s/he will interact actively with members of the surfaces and interfaces research group, which include the PI, and four PhD students. Synchrotron based experiments will be performed at MaxLab (Lund) and Astrid (Aarhus) sources. Complementary experiments will be carried out with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS, UPS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) at Dublin City University. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with experimental research groups at Trinity College Dublin (TCD).
Project Description:
An important challenge in nanotechnology is the ability to control the assembly of molecular species into complex functional structures. The use of two-dimensional molecular networks to pattern surfaces is currently one of the most promising methods to produce architectures beyond the limit that is fundamentally possible with conventional lithography. This controlled assembly of nanostructures offers a number of powerful approaches for the development of molecule-based devices, possessing functions such as rectifying, switching and sensing. This project explores several strategies for the formation of surface supported, two-dimensional, covalently bonded molecular networks. The project focuses on functionalised metallo-porphyrin molecules as the basic building unit. The structural, chemical and electronic properties of these covalently bonded porphyrin nanostructures will be characterized by STM and synchrotron based spectroscopies. The templating, photovoltaic, catalytic and gas sensing properties of the resulting molecular networks will be explored.
Duration of Contract:
The position will be filled initially for a period of two years, with the possibility of a further extension for 12 months, subject to funding.

Salary Scale: ?37,750 - ?41,181
