Dear Dr. Li,

I have now received comments from the referees regarding your manuscript.  One referee's remarks are simplistic and cursory, and the second does not recommend publication.  I have also carefully studied the manuscript, and other publications in this field. Given that the second referee is a world leading expert in this field, I have decided to reject the manuscript at this stage.

I'm sorry I could not provide a more positive response.

Yours Sincerely,
Editor,
Journal of Materials Science

Reviewer #1: The manuscript entitled "Fabrication of flower-like MoS2 microsphere using MoO3 nanobelts as precursors" by Li et al. describes a low temperature hydrothermal synthetic route to obtain MoS2 microsphere with a flower-like morphology. Interest in synthesizing high surface area MoS2 like nanoflowers, nanotubes and other similar forms is currently the area of interest for various applications like catalysis, field-emission and hydrogen storage. It is in this aspect that the present manuscript generates great interest in reporting the synthesis of high surface area flower-like MoS2. The as-synthesized flowers have been well characterized and adequate electron microscopy has been carried out.
However the following points need to be addressed before the article is suitable to be published in J. Mater. Sci.
(1)     The following ref: F. L. Deepak, A. Mayoral, M. J. Yacaman, Appl. Phys. A. 96 (2009) 861 on the transformation of MoO3 nanobelts into MoS2 nanotubes and F. L. Deepak, A. Mayoral, M. J. Yacaman, Mat. Chem. Phys. 118 (2009) 392-397 which reports the synthesis of MoS2 nanoflowers should be included in the list of references since they are two recent papers in this field.
(2)     Page-5, Correct the Fig.1, caption, Fig 1d- TEM image
(3)     Line 45-46, page 5, No ref is included in the list for Tenne et al. Please include a couple of refs which are suitable to the discussion.
(4)     Page-6, line 30, should be "quantity" not "quality."
(5)     Page-6, line 44-45, should be Fig 3d and not Fig. 4d.
(6)     The scale in Fig. 3d is not clear.

Reviewer #2:

In general terms this work is interesting, I would see merit to its publication if a systematic series of control experiments were conducted to fully demonstrate the formation mechanism.  As it stands now, the microstructural characterization does not fully corroborate the conclusions, with regards to identification of the vesicle, and why it exists.  Furthermore, better HRTEM (and EELS) is required to confirm the statements made from figure 3d (and 4a). Finally, I really find the use of jargon (flowers and belts) to be very poor descriptors.  I would encourage the authors to continue their work, but at present more solid data is required before this manuscript should be published.
