Determination of electrical load composition to enable reduced network investment and energy savings

Electrical demand is composed of diverse elements, ranging from light bulbs to dishwashers to industrial smelters. The exact composition of electrical demand is still a relatively unknown factor in electricity distribution. Estimates of demand compositions are employed to determine the level of network investment that will be required. Increased knowledge of the demand composition will improve the efficiency of this investment process and reduce costs. In addition, energy savings through the reduction of the network voltage have been proposed. Such savings are dependent on the demand composition. New technologies such as smart meters now mean that sophisticated field tests can be carried out on the low voltage electricity network for the first time. This project will determine the demand composition through such field tests, derive enhanced demand models from the test results and thus reduce the required network investments and determine if energy savings are achievable through voltage reduction.

A postdoctoral researcher is sought for this SFI funded one year project. This research project will be undertaken under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Keane at the Electricity Research Centre at UCD (www.ucd.ie/erc) and will be pursued in close collaboration with ESB Networks who will host the researcher for a number of months and assist in the implementation of the field trials.

Two post-doctoral research associates are now being recruited in broad areas of environmental nanotechnology and the specific project opportunities will depend on the interests and experience of the applicants. However, previous research experiences in one or more of the following areas are highly valued:

Development of novel, highly efficient, and new-generation nanomaterials for environmental application, including but not limited to: water treatment by adsorption (e.g., highly selective adsorbents based on molecular imprinting, core-shell structured nanomaterials, functionalized mesoporous carbon/silica-based materials) and by catalysis (e.g., highly efficient bimetallic catalysts and photocatalyst, finding solutions to noble metal catalyst poisoning)
Development of lab-on-a-chip sensor based on microfluidics for fast water contaminant analysis (e.g., PPCPs, heavy metals) via fluorescent, colorimetric, or electrochemical detection . Previous experiences with enzyme, aptamer or DNAzyme based sensors are highly valued.   

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in material sciences, chemical engineering, or related fields. Successful candidates are expected to have a good publication record, ability to work in a team, and a good command of oral and written English.



The positions are available starting April 2010 and the appointment will be initially for one year and may be renewed up to 3 years pending research progress. The salary for postdocs at KAUST is highly competitive (USD $50,000~90,000 per year, depending on qualifications) and there is no income tax in Saudi Arabia. Free housing (no utility charge), health insurances and air-ticket for returning home country each year will be provided. Applicants should submit a detailed resume with a research proposal to Professor Peng Wang at peng.wang@kaust.edu.sa. Review of applications will begin immediately and the positions will remain open until filled.

(2) Professor Wang is always looking for self-motivated and hard-working PhD students who are interested in nanotechnology to join his group. There are NO tuitions and fees for master and PhD students at KAUST. The stipend for PhD students at KAUST is highly competitive (USD $30,000 to $40,000 per year plus free housing and health insurance).

3、博后位置介绍 The Biomedical Optics Laboratory at the Catholic University of America is seeking to fill an immediate opening for a post-doctoral fellow. The one year project is funded by a NIDDR and is a collaborative effort between the Catholic University of America and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington DC aimed at investigating skin health with photonics techniques.

Research in our laboratory focuses on the development of diagnostic techniques for a variety of applications. Current projects include: early detection of diabetic retinopathy, assessment of skin cancer margins, and monitoring of skin health in individuals with
spinal cord injury.

Qualifications:
The postdoctoral fellow should be a motivated individual with a background in biophotonics, that has prior knowledge of fiber based techniques and familiarity with both instrumentation and models.
