美国Ohio University 生活指南

初来乍到
      新生初来乍到，在安顿好生活的各方面的同时，更要及早与学校及系办公室取得联系。
报到的大致程序如下:
1. 携带相关的证件(护照、I20 表或IAP66 表等)到 International Student and Faculty Service报到，学校会给你一个临时的Student Identification Number, 可在校内暂时用作临时的社会安全号码(Social Security Number,
SSN).

2. 去HDL Center办理Student I.D.；
3. 向系里报到。已经确定导师的去拜会导师；
4. 参加新生入学指导(ORIENTATION)，学校和系里会分别举行，一般包含城市介绍、校园介绍、系中教师和同学的介绍，选课的介绍以及注册的详细要求及程序。历年8月底，CSSA有自己的orientation。
5. 社会保险号码(Social Security Number, SSN)
社会保险号码在美国是个人的身份号码，处处都要用到它。务必保密好你的号码，以免被他人损害你的信用纪录。在向International Student office报到后，如果你有奖学金或由学校指定的工作，International Student office会给你一份文件，凭这你可以到Athens Mall里的Society Security Administration去办理SSN。
6. 有人搭讪，在听不懂的情况下，一定要说NO,thanks。免得受骗。
若发生紧急****，也可打电話到International Student and Faculty Service (ISFS) 1-740-593-4330，也可打电话给CSSA的同学。
7. 打电话。我们来到以后陆续去购买手机，一般两到四个人合用一个family plan。你可以在学校所有公用电话免费打本地的电话号码。Ohio东南部的区号是740，所以能用这里的公用电话免费打很多740的号码。拨打这类免费电话，先拨9，然后拨7位的电话号码，即不用拨打区号740。


安顿入住
    1. 租房
1.1. 信息:
    (1) 到街上看。如果有空房，一般的房东都会在门前贴上"For Rent"字样及联系电话。这是一个比较大的信息源，但比较累及麻烦。
    (2) 看布告栏：在学校图书馆及教学楼和International Student Office都有布告栏，在那儿可发现不少租房信息。
    (3) 听人介绍。这是一个比较机动灵活的方法。
    (4) 看报纸:在学校的很多大楼都可以找到当天的Athens News, The Post。前者有很多租房信息，後者有一些但很少。你可以在报上发现有关房子的位置、简介、价格情况和电话。
    (5) CSSA mailing list和学校的mulberry（需从学校网站下载安装）上：你可以在这儿发现很多老生寻求sublease的广告及寻找Roommate 的广告。
    (6) 和周围的新生共享信息。由於都是新生并且都在找房子，可得到很多有用、合适的信息。
1.2. 房屋种类:
    (1) Studio or Efficiency: 每月租金包括水，电，气约$350-$550，其特徵是一个大空间内，起居室兼作卧室和饭厅，浴室独立，厨房一般与起居室相连。
    (2) One-bedroom apartment: ($350-$745) 一房一厅，厨房与浴室独立。
    (3) Two-bed Room apartment or Three-bed Room Apartment: ($450-$700)厨房与浴室独立。可以和朋友一起合租，通常比单独住Studio，Efficiency或One-bed Room Apartment便宜。另外房屋还有FURNISHED 与UNFURNISHED 之分，FURNISHED 当然贵一些，但对新来的人很方便。中国人喜欢炒菜做饭。Studio 或Efficiency 有时没有单独的厨房，厨房与卧室之间没有间隔。因此选择Studio 或Efficiency 时要考虑这一因素。否则，你就等於住在厨房里了！
2. 社区安全:
  Athens是个治安比较好的城市，但也不排除暴力犯罪发生的可能性。
  校内报警电话为740-593-1911，市内报警911。
3. 签约及注意事项:
    (1) 押金：Security Deposit: 租房子通常签约几个月至一年不等，若想续约，一般须在期满一个月前书面告知房东。押金通常为一个月的房租，最多不超过两个月的房租。当你离开时，必须把钥匙交给房东，并留下日後联络地址。房东在你离开三十天内，必须归还全部押金，或列出毁损物品及押金差额。当然，最好的办法是在你将钥匙还给房东以前，请他/她检查房屋的情况并退还押金。
    (2) 租金: 应考虑是否含水，电，气(utility)。如果不含电，那就要问清楚暖气是否用电或气，否则冬天要花一笔可观的电费。一般留学生电费一个月约$20-30，但如果暖气是用电的可能就超过60了。另外有些房子含家具，但家具可能要另付租金，看房子、签lease 时需问清。
    (3) 签约时要特别注意看清条约款项。
    (4) 其它注意事项:
      检查房屋的清洁及通风情况;
      签约时要仔细检查屋子，对任何墙壁及家俱破损要同房东做好记录;
      问清房东是否可以在墙上钉钉子等。
      必要时可以拍一、两张照片，以备日后有所依据。
4. 水电气
      如果租金不含水，电，煤气，那么在签好组约后，就要向水，电和煤气公司申请供水电气，一般房东会提供相关信息。提出申请后，一般会在一两天内接通。



财务管理
1. 银行开户:
学校周围的银行有:

开户注意事项：
      新生所带的美金现钞应尽快存入银行!在美国，身边不宜携带、家里不宜存放大量现金。在银行开户时，应注意:
    (1) 携带相关的证件:如护照，学生ID，社会安全号(Social Security Number, SSN), 若开户时尚未取得社会安全号码，可以先开户，待得到社会安全号码以後再告诉银行.
    (2) 选择适当的存款方式:美国银行与大陆银行不同，若所存款项要达到一定的数目，银行不支付利息。不同存款方式收取的手续费不同，开户时可根据自己的现金数量及收入水平选取相应的存款方式。我们一般在银行同时开以下两种帐户：checking和savings。这两个帐号不是截然分开的。
    (3) 开户时，上述银行会同时免费给客户办理取款卡(Debit Card)。运用自动取款卡，用户可以在任何一个自动取提款机上提取一定数量的现金。如果此提款机属於用户的开户银行，提款及其他服务一般是免费的；否则，将会收取一定的手续费。
    (4) 支票：在美国，支票几乎是最常见的付款方式。在开户时，银行会给予新客户一定数量的临时支票，正式的支票会随後寄到。开户时，应询问是否对新客户有一定的优惠。有一些银行会免费赠送支票本给新客户。一般来说，一盒支票本(200 张)价钱大约为15 美元。一般一年使用100 张支票。
    (5) 除了Checking Account和Savings Account以外，尚有定期账户(Certificate Deposit CD)。定期账户类似於国内的定期存款，其利率是各种账户中最高的。而且其利率不会随时间变化，是固定的。如果你有大笔金额，而且暂时不用，可以考虑存入CD 账户。
“小窍门”
    (1) 开口问清楚银行的要求。银行都有关於开户的书面说明，如果你害怕初来乍到的口语说不清楚，可以将银行的书面说明仔细阅读后再办理开户手续。一般而言，最好同时开两种账户：支票账户Checking account)和储蓄账户(savings account)。一般来说，储蓄账户的利率略高於支票账户，因此可将平时常用的小笔金额放入支票账户，大金额备用的钱则存入储蓄账户。
    (2) 只购买足够的支票即可。有的文票账户会规定用户每月只可使用一定数量的支票，超出以後每张支票会收取一定的手续费。开支票时，为了避免支票被转作他用，可在文票的背面写上"for deposit only， 若接受了别人的支票，想存入自己的账户里，最好是到了柜台前才在支票後签名，以防遗失後被他人兑现。每次开支票或存钱时都应做好记录，以防止账户的余额低於最低存款限制。
    (3) 尽量在属於开户银行的自动提款机上提款及享用其他服务。使用自动提款卡要注意保护密码。不要将密码告诉任何人。提款服务结束後，切记将提款卡取出，以防他人使用。如果提款卡末取出，在几分钟内又无人使用，提款机会自动“吞吃”提款卡。用户可以持有效证件到银行索取提款卡。
    (4) 银行每月向用户邮寄月statement，收到后应仔细查对，以保障自己的权益。
2. 申请信用卡(Credit Card):
    信用卡在美国是一种很常见和方便的付款方式。使用信用卡可以避免随身携带大量现金的麻烦。除了个别地方(如电影院，快餐馆)，绝大多数的地方都接受信用卡。
信用卡的申请与使用：（申请的前提是持有SSN）
    (1) 填写申请表：开学伊始，学校会有许多信用卡公司设立的服务点。你可以在那儿填写申请表格并提供其他信息，如学生I.D. 号码等，还会收到T 恤等小礼品。近年来已经流行网上申请。
    (2) 信用卡公司接到申请表後，会检查你相关的信用纪录以决定是否接受你的申请。大多数来自大陆的新生都还没有信用纪录，因此首次申请可能会遭到拒绝。通常，我们以Ohio University Credit Union为第一个申请对象。但是，总有一些小的公司或主要面向学生的公司会接受你的申请。另外，American Express 有专为学生而设的plan,比较容易申请到。
    (3) 信用卡公司接受你的申请後，会将信用卡直接邮寄给你，并会随信附上相关的规定。仔细阅读这些规定，了解如何恰当地使用信用卡。另外，收到信用卡後(如果必需)尽快打电话activate 它，并在卡的反面署名。
    (4) 信用卡使用时，你只需要刷卡并在收据上签字。信用卡公司每月将账单寄给你，你根据账单用支票的方式付款。
    (5) 另外信用卡还可用於提取现金。但你会为此付相当高的利息和手续费用。
“小窍门”
    (1) 申请信用卡时应注意该信用卡公司是否向用户收取年费(annual fee)，以及利息的比率是多少。一般，大多数信用卡公司都不向用户收取年费。收取年费的信用卡不必申请。
    (2) 妥善保存信用卡。收到信用卡後，记下其公司的电话号码，信用卡的号码。如果信用卡遗失，立即打电话取消此信用卡。
    (3) 尽量不用信用卡提取现金，因为有可能被收手续费。每次使用信用卡，保留其收据。受到账单後，检查是否与收据相符。另外，在每次账单上注明时间内付清所有的账目，否则，信用卡公司将收取很高的利息。

购物指南


    在美国，住宅区和商业区附近有一些小商店和食品店及小型购物中心，但大部分商店都集中在Mall 里。Mall 通常都坐落在离住宅区较远的地方，包括一个大型建筑群，里面有象J.C.Penny, Goody's这样的百货商店，也有Footshot 这样的专卖店。在这个大建筑群附近还有Walmart, Kroger 这样的大卖场。Mall附近经常还有各种各样的快餐店。Athens有二个Mall(Athens Mall和University Mall)，它们相隔不远，你可以在那周围找到所有必需品。
    日杂用品可以在Wal-Mart，Big-Lots购买；学校附近有Familydollar，这是一个很便宜的店，但是质量不是很好。这儿的学生一般每星期shopping一次，主要就是买点食品，Kroger，Walmart，BigBear，SaveALot是大家常去的地方，Athens还有一家东方店New Market，可以买到国内常见的食品，学校附近有Bob's Supermarket，对于没有车的同学来说那也是个不错的选择。当然，Athens的商品并不丰富，等到以后有车了，可以去Columbus购物，那里的东西要丰富得多。对于喜欢品牌的同学来说，在离开Athens约100 mile有Jeffsonville Premiere Outlet哪里有较多品牌产品如Polo，Gap，Ports等价格较百货商场和Mall来的便宜。



交通，邮局和书店


    学校在非节假日有校车Bobcat为学生服务，那是免费的，约15分钟一班从8:00am-5:00pm，覆盖了大半Athens，对于没车的同学这是很不错的。Athens也有公共交通，那是收费的，也是大概半小时一班，从7:00am-7:00pm，在Athens的两个Mall前都有车站，但感觉并不是很方便。
    学校的Baker Center四楼和离校不远的Stimson Ave.有邮局从8:00am-5:00pm，周六9:00am-12:00pm，周日休息。有急事的同学可用Fedex和UPS学校的很多地方都有它们的发送点。
学习所用的教科书，都在Athens的四家书店购买，它们都在在Court Street上，分別是College Bookstore(http://www.cbsohiou.com/index2.html), Little Professor Bookstore, Specialty Books(http://www.specialty-books.com/), Follett's University Bookstore(http://shop.efollett.com/htmlroot/GlobalIndex.html)。 一般有买used book的就买used book，美国的书实在是太贵了。另外，网上也可买新书或旧书，如：http://www.addall.com，http://www.Amazon.com, http://www.half.com 。

志愿者出车活动


    每周二下午6点，在学校ping center前会有志愿者免费接送想去walmart购物的同学。在此我们非常感谢这些志愿者的义务服务，并且希望有更多的志愿者能够加入这个活动


饮食人生


1.中餐馆
    当地有几家中国餐馆，几乎所有美国的中国餐馆都已经美国化（除了有大量华人聚居的那几个大城市），很多餐馆都提供buffet，Athens的也不例外。下面介绍几家中国学生常去的餐馆，Court Street上有China King（提供Buffet，也可以点菜）和北京饭店（提供快餐和点菜），位于Stimson Ave的福华楼（点菜），位于University Mall的龙辉（Grand China Buffet），West Union Street 上的LuiLui(老板是中国人，象是中式西餐，但味道不错，贵些)，Nesonville的福华楼（点菜）；此外位于离Athens 东40mile 处的Parkersburg 有一家Super China Buffet，King Buffet@Grill以及西北50mile处Lancester的龙 运，这两家主要提供Buffet餐馆也是常去的地方，味道不错，东西也很多，并且dinner都有海鲜。
2.美式速食
    美式速食有Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Subway, Dommino's Pizza, Papa John's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver, Avalanche Pizza, etc.，及其他餐厅、咖啡馆与酒吧，例如：Bob Evans, Ponderosa, 7 Sauces, Damon's Grill, Oak Room, Casa Cantina/Nueva, McGuffey's (at OU Inn), Pig Skin, Court St. Diner, Buffalo Wings& Rings, Bagel Street Dell, Brenen's Coffee, Perk's Coffee House & Roastery, The Oasis, World's Best Bagels, The Union Grill, Union Street Cafe, Hole in the Wall, Larry's Dawg House, etc. 它们大多位于学校的Court Street，East State Street和Richland Ave.上。
3.小费
    速食店一般不用给小费。凡是带有服务性质的都应给小费包括外送(delivery)其比率一般为10-20%。

文体活动


    1. 体育活动
      学校的体育设施很齐全，Ping Student Center是全美最好的五个学生体育活动中心之一，有健身房，室内排球，羽毛球，篮球场，壁球场，乒乓球桌和200米的塑胶田径跑道等; Aquatic Center有标准的奥林匹克游泳池；Bird Arena是一个溜冰和冰球馆。此外学校还有golf球场，室内和室外网球场等设施。
CSSA有固定的足球，羽毛球和篮球俱乐部，具体情况可上CSSA主页http://www.ohio.edu/~CSSA查看。每年CSSA都会组织一些比赛。
    2. 电影
      East state street上有Athena电影院，2005年新建，$6/人；离学校10mile处有Movies Town电影院这是Athens地区最大的电影院，$5/人，这两家电影院都放映最新的电影，服务时间:5:00pm-12:00pm，周末1:00pm-12:00pm。
    3.CSSA活动
      每年CSSA都要组织三次大的活动(端午龙舟赛，中秋节和春节)，这三次活动吸引了众多当地人和其他国家的学生和学者，成为了Athens重要的活动之一，也是人们了解和接触中国、中国人和中国学生的机会；同时这三次活动也是中国学生共叙友谊、互通有无的重要场合


车轮代步


    ”美国是建设在车轮上的国家“，这句话是很形象的。许多学生到美后便陆续开始买车。
    1. 车的价格随型号和车况有很大差别，网站http://www.kbb.com 提供了比较详细的介绍和比较。这个网站上关于旧车的价格有两种：一为Trade in Price，这是车主将车卖给Dealer 的价格参考，另一个是Market Price，这是买主从Dealer 那里买旧车的参考。从私人车主那里买车，价格一般介于这两者之间，可以参考kbb的Private Party的价格。买车可以多跑几家dealer，并且要关注Athens News上的买车广告，从私人手上买车最好在买前，到修车处对车进行全面的检查，以免出现大问题。买车不能心急要从长计议。买了车后要去HDL Center里的Athens County Title Office办理title的转换，然后在隔壁的Deputy Registrar-Motor Vehicle办理新车牌。
    2. 驾驶执照：在Ohio，每个驾车人必须有Ohio的驾驶执照，同时驾驶执照也是一张重要的I.D.，在美国境内作用类似身份证。Athens驾照申请地在Athens County Title Office旁。驾驶执照考试分为两部份：笔试和路试。在学习Ohio的驾驶员手册后，可以去进行笔试，通过后可以得到学车证（temporary instruction permit，亦有身份证作用），有了它，就可以在有驾驶执照的朋友的陪同下开始上路练习了。自己感觉练的不错了后，就可以打电话预约路试，通过后就可以得到驾驶执照。
    3. 注册：在Ohio，每个车主必须注册，获得Registration和License，地点和考驾照的地方一致，此外，AAA 是全美最大的有关机车驾驶的民间组织，他们也受理有关机车注册，保险，驾驶执照更换地址等事宜，但有时会收取一定的费用，请询问清楚。加入AAA，每年有一定的年费，但可以得到一定的服务，如在某些汽车部件或修理的商店中有价格优惠，可以索取免费地图，可以得到路上紧急服务，如拖车等，(服务的级别按年费的多少有所不同)。Athens的AAA地点在East State Street上，离学校很近。
    4. 保险：在美国，每个驾车人必须购买汽车保险，保险价格根据保险的种类，金额，驾驶人的性别，经验，年龄，婚姻状况，以及车况有很大差别，一般对旧车来讲，可以先购买半年的全保，或根据个人情况而定。

美国Harvard University生活指南

住房: 对新生来说，学校宿舍是最佳选择。如果没有机会申请学校宿舍，请到Harvard International Office， Harvard Housing Office， 和 GSAS Housing Office 查看有关信息。HCSSA Mailinglist 和其它学生会(MIT CSSA，etc.)都会经常在网上发布住房信息，请随时留意。

电话: 打电话到中国最便宜和最简便的办法是使用电话卡。在哈佛广场（Harvard Square）的CVS可以买到，这里售出的电话卡质量稳定，但价格还不够便宜。最便宜的电话卡可在Chinatown买到，88超级市场等处有售。很多网站也可以购买。如没有时间买电话卡，可选择一家提供优惠的长话公司，如AT&T和MCI等，在开通市内电话服务时与电话公司说明即可。如果您使用的是宿舍电话，无法选择长话公司，校方费率是每分钟$1.10。如要转成地方电话公司服务，可打电话6-8200与校内电话服务部门联系。

饮食: 如果没有参加Dudly House 的Meal Plan，可使用宿舍楼内公用厨房。Science Center里的Green House处可买Pizza和Coffee，Memorial Hall地下一层咖啡厅提供快餐食品，是解决午餐的好地方。Conant Hall后面停车场有中式快餐，可买盒饭。如出去用餐的话，Harvard Square有几家中餐馆，最近是燕京。另一家大升楼在肯尼迪学院对面，凭哈佛学生证九折优惠。Mass Ave.上有京味和香港楼，往Central Square方向走几分钟就到。Beacon Street上Star Market旁有风味亭。如有时间，吃中餐最好还是去Chinatown，选择比较多。如果有车的话，Brookline的四川饭庄，Somerville的东海园(山东风味)，Framingham的华亭(上海风味)都是各具特色的好去处。

购物: 一般东西都可在Harvard Square买到，但价格较高。在获得信用卡后，可以尽快熟悉利用各种促销机会在网上购物。（注意：最好不要使用ATM卡、Check Card或电子支票网上购物）食品日用品类:附近有两家Star Market，一家在 Porter Square，一家在Beacon Street，从宿舍走过去大概要十五分钟时间。在Star Market一定要申请优惠卡，可以便宜很多。另外附近有一家Market Basket，走路约二十分钟左右，但比Star Market更便宜，具体方位请查地图。如购中国食品，一般得去Chinatown。在New England Medical Center地铁站下车后，出站右转，五分钟左右可到88超市。平价超市在88超市斜对面。在Chinatown牌楼对面还有一家美东超市，去美东超市最好在South Station 地铁站下车。

衣物类: 一般来说最便宜的地方是Filenes Basement，每天有打折。从Harvard SQ。坐红线到 Downtown Crossing下车即可。

学习用品类: 在COOP和CVS可以买到，偏贵。在Harvard Square附近有一家 Staples,价格相对来说比较便宜。在网上(PriceScan，Amazon.com)往往可以买到较为便宜的书。

电器类: 如要买电脑，电视机，冰箱等，可以到BestBuy，CircuitCity等地去买。在Cambridge Side Galleria里有BestBuy和CircuitCity，从Harvard Yard 的Johnson Gate 外乘69路公车可到。Sullivan Square也有一家较大的Circuit City，坐地铁黄线可到。如有信用卡，这类东西也可在网上购买，如Dell，BestBuy 等。

Living on campus with other graduate students can be a great experience and a relatively inexpensive option. It gives you the chance to make friends from outside your department and automatically identifies you with a social group.

GSAS Residence Halls
GSAS operates four residence halls with enough housing for approximately 400 students per year—all singles. The residence halls are located in the North Yard area, near the corner of Oxford and Everett Streets, adjacent to the Law School, just minutes away from the Science Center. Perkins and Conant Halls were constructed in the late 1890s, with some rooms including (non-functional) fireplaces. Child and Richards Halls are more modern and were designed in 1950 by the noted architect Walter Gropius of the Bauhaus school of architecture, famous for its minimalist (i.e., crummy) design.

Many graduates feel that living in the residence halls provides by the far the best opportunity for meeting other students, especially from outside of their departments. Even students who thought their days of dorm living were long over have found their stays in Residence Halls to be among their best Harvard experiences.

Applications and information are available in early March. Rooms begin to be assigned by lottery and initial assignments are mailed in June. As additional rooms become available, they are given to students on the waiting list until all rooms are filled. Incoming students are given priority over continuing students and those who enroll in the meal plan over those who decline it. Students with special medical or physical needs must include with their application a physician's letter explaining their condition or disability.

Will you get a room as a continuing student? Your chances depend on your lottery number and the number of room assignment cancellations during the summer. If you do not get a room in the initial lottery and your waiting list number is within the first 50, you are likely to be offered a room sometime during the summer. If your lottery number is larger than 50, it is extremely unlikely that you will get a room before classes begin in September. If you are going to stay on the waiting list, have a backup plan in case you do not get a room.

In case of a vacancy during the year, which occasionally happens, the free room is assigned according to the waiting list. Generally, at least one of the GSAS residence halls is open for housing during the summer. Priority for rooms is given to current residents of any of the residence halls who want to stay for the entire summer. Others are assigned rooms on an availability basis. Keep in mind is that summer housing contracts end in mid-August. Unless you have been assigned a room for the fall, there are no extensions. So if you are taking over a lease that begins on September 1, you will need someplace else to stay for a couple of weeks.

All students living in the Residence Halls are also required to purchase the Dudley House Meal Plan.

Other Halls and Facilities
Administered by Radcliffe, the Cronkhite Graduate Center (617-495-8781), at the corner of Ash and Brattle Streets, houses 141 men and women from several Harvard graduate schools. Both single rooms and suites are available, with a mandatory 10 meal-per-week board contract for all residents. Radcliffe also offers several apartments for graduate women and their families at 83 Brattle Street (617-495-8187), with year-long (Sep-Aug) leases required. Contact the Assistant Director of Facilities and Administrative Services (617-495-8187) for more information.

GSAS students are eligible to live in the Law School Dormitories (617-495-5521), and occasionally, rooms are available for non-Div students in the Divinity School Dormitories (617-496-6569). Generally decisions are not made until late in the summer or in September. GSAS students working in the Longwood Medical Area may be interested in housing in Vanderbilt Hall (617-432-1630) at the corner of Louis Pasteur Avenue and Longwood Avenue, across the street from the Med School quad.

Overview
The local rental market has been especially difficult in recent years and seems to be worsening. You will need to put a great deal of energy into your housing search, be aggressive about your search, and be prepared to act quickly. Good apartment deals can be posted and taken before you get up in the morning. Where to move will depend on several factors including price, distance to Harvard Square, and accessibility of public transportation. Below are descriptions of several areas where GSAS students tend to live.

It is an advantage to search for housing on location during the summer months, when the market turns in favor of renters. Many people sign year-long leases in September but move away in June, leaving you the chance to find sublets with an option to extend the lease. Craigslist is starting point for either finding a place to sublet (or, if necessary later on, posting an available sublet). This gives you a chance to live in the apartment and deal with the landlord and the commute without any obligation to stay more than a few months. If you like the place and build a good relationship with the landlord, you can try to stay for the coming year. You might also consider starting a lease in June, so you won't have to sublet.

Harvard-Affiliated Housing

Harvard Real Estate Services (HRES) offers the opportunity for members of the Harvard community to live in Off-Campus properties at prices that are often lower than surrounding properties. Utilities are often included (although this varies by property), and Harvard is said to be a good landlord. While most of these offerings are found in the immediate vicinity of Harvard Square, the apartments at Trilogy in the Fenway are available at more reasonable prices for students who need access to the Longwood Medical Area. A lottery system is used to prioritize housing selections so HRES applications are typically due around the beginning of May for the following academic year. A roommate location service is available.

Cambridge
Many GSAS students live here, though generally it's more expensive than its neighbors further from Harvard Square. Cambridge is divided into several real estate enclaves: Harvard Square, Inman Square, Central Square, Porter Square, Cambridgeport, and North Cambridge. The Harvard Square area covers roughly Massachusetts Avenue ("Mass. Ave" from Sacramento to Hancock Streets, and from the Charles River to the Cambridge-Somerville line. The Inman Sq. area extends northeastward from Central Sq. along Prospect Street, and due north along Mass. Ave to the borders of MIT and Kendall Square. The Cambridgeport area is located along the Charles River from Western Ave. to Mass. Ave./MIT. The North Cambridge area runs northeastward from Porter Sq. along Mass. Ave.

Somerville
The second largest concentration of GSAS students is found in Somerville. Rents there are significantly lower than in Cambridge. Students tend to reside in three general areas: along the Cambridge-Somerville line (Beacon St.); in the vicinity of Porter Square; and around Davis Square. The Cambridge-Somerville line area is generally within walking distance (10-20 minutes by foot) to Harvard Sq. Porter Sq. is one stop away from Harvard Square on the Red Line of the T in addition to being a well-bused area within walking distance from Harvard Sq. It is therefore the most convenient area of Somerville in terms of public transportation. Davis Sq. is farther away, but still accessible via the Red Line and busses.

Watertown
Watertown borders Cambridge to the West. Rents in Watertown are also significantly lower, and it is easily accessible via #71 bus.

Greater Boston
Boston itself lies just across the Charles River from Cambridge and is easily accessible via bus, T, on foot, or by bicycle. Rents in the immediate areas of Boston, such as Back Bay, South End, Beacon Hill and the Fenway, are often higher than in Cambridge, but good deals can be found in Allston-Brighton. GSAS Students in the Division of Medical Science (DMS) often choose to live in the Longwood Medical Area (along Huntington Ave.) or in nearby Brookline Village, Jamaica Plain (JP), Coolidge Corner, or the Fenway. Coolidge Corner and JP tend to have lower rents. The Roxbury and Mission Hill areas offer lower rents as well, but they are still considered by a few to be unsafe compared to the alternatives suggested above.



Leases and Landlords

A lease is a legal document, so be sure you comprehend the ramifications of signing it before you do so. While there are certain legal protections for renters, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make sure you fully understand all the terms of the lease, especially parts about giving notice if not renewing it. And make sure you do give notice in writing by the first of the month or other required date.

By the same token, your landlord has responsibilities. You can expect him, for example, to repair matter-of-course damages to your apartment. If you feel that your landlord is not respecting your agreement, follow up on it. Knowing your rights and your landlord's legal obligations can protect you. The GSAS Office of Housing Services and Harvard Housing Office have copies of The Tenant's Rights Handbook.

Most leases are for a year. If you think you may stay somewhere for a few years, keep an eye out for leases with fixed rate increases, which can guarantee you a rent increase less than the rate of inflation. In addition to fixed-term leases (normally one year), there are Tenant At Will (TAW) arrangements, essentially one-month or month-to-month leases. They can be terminated with 30 days' notice by either the landlord or the renter. Therefore, rents are only guaranteed for the same 30 days.

Most landlords charge a security deposit equivalent to one month's rent, payable at the time you sign your lease or move in. Of course, you must also pay the rent for that first month. And most landlords also the rent for your last month of stay, whenever that may be, to ensure that you don't take off without paying them.

An often-overlooked law requires the landlord to furnish you with a receipt that shows the bank and account in which your security deposit is invested. The security deposit serves as the landlord's protection in the event that you cause damage to the unit. If you do not cause such damage, ensure that your security deposit is returned to you when you move out. The security deposit is your money, not your landlord's.

Other Expenses: Utilities and Insurance
Pay attention to whether or not your rent includes any or all utilities. Water and sewerage are generally included in the rent but other utilities vary widely, depending upon your particular arrangement. In New England, the most expensive utility is usually heat -- be it gas, electric, or oil -- which can be over $100 per month. An apartment with heat included can be a much better deal in the winter than it seems. Hence it's worth estimating an apartment's heat cost from average utility bills and the quality of the apartment's insulation. Gas and electric companies will often do a free energy audit, so, if you find a drafty window or high utility bills after you move in, this might be worth a try.

One of the most important things you can do for piece of mind and protection is to get renter's insurance. In the (hopefully unlikely) event of fire or theft, your personal property will be protected. You can get coverage for all your personal items, whether you live in an apartment or dorm. Depending on your level of coverage, premiums can be well under $100 per year, a small amount of money for the assurance it offers. Applications for insurance are available at GSAS Housing Services. The Harvard Police Department can also help engrave your valuable property with a mark and keep a record of serial numbers. Housing Hints

Apartments go fast, especially in the spring, so once you know what you want, be prepared to act fast (within hours).
There are many landholding landlords who rent lots of student apartments. Learn about these real estate moguls and avoid them or seek them out appropriately.
Ask the current occupants about an apartment: is the landlord decent, how much do utilities really cost, has there been a bug or rodent problem, etc.
Ask about bugs: has the place been exterminated? Consider asking to see the exterminator's bill or contract.
Ask your landlords about who owns responsibility of snow removal and weeding from your steps, sidewalk, or lawn, as the case may be.
Don't rule out closer but slightly more expensive housing if you can afford it. Being able to nip home for lunch is a great way to reduce stress and save money. Also, a short walk at night is much safer.
Find students who are graduating and negotiate taking over their lease. Landlords love it because it saves them advertising and broker fees.
As always, consider the accessibility of supermarkets and laundry facilities. (Envision yourself wading through snow...)
Some places throw in a parking space, which is of great value (maybe even if you don't have a car! Parking = $$).

Dudley House Meal Plan
Many students are on the Dudley House Meal Plan. They enjoy five meals (lunch or dinner) a week throughout the school year. Lunches, served from 11:30am-2pm, offer one from each category: entree/hot meal, sandwich, salad, soup, chips, dessert, and a fountain drink. Dinners, served from 5pm-8pm, are all you-can-eat. A selection of several meat and vegetarian entrees and side dishes is offered. There is a full salad bar spread including soup and pasta. The food might not always be five star, but it's varied, balanced, and nutritious. Even better, dining at Dudley gives you the chance to meet people and have relaxed conversations over a meal. Taking into account price, quality and amount of food -- not to mention ambiance -- it's the best deal in the Square.
Students living in Residence Halls are required to enroll in the meal plan, but it is offered to all GSAS students. To sign up for the meal plan, go to the Harvard Dining Services office, 65-67 Winthrop St. Even if you are not on the meal plan, you may still eat dinner at Dudley House whenever you want. Just pay in cash ($10+ per meal) or charge your meals to your term bill.

There are many campus restaurants besides Dudley House, most of which accept both regular and Crimson Cash. To the list of restaurants below, which are operated by Harvard University Dining Services, can be added a large number owned by other groups such as C�est Bon. Crimson Cash is a payment method applied to your Harvard ID or to a Crimson Cash card, which can be purchased from a Value Transfer Station (the black boxes, distributed throughout campus, that look like a combination change machine and public telephone). Crimson Cash simplifies your dining transactions at Harvard University campus restaurants, and makes laundry, vending machines, and photocopiers more convenient; instead of worrying about change or cash, you can just swipe your ID/ Crimson Cash card. Harvard shuttle provides safe, convenient transportation throughout the Cambridge and Allston campuses. Its major stops are at Memorial Hall, Pound Hall, Currier House, Mather House, Johnston Gate, the Science Center, JFK and the Business School. Pocket-sized schedules showing routes and times are available around campus at the libraries, the Information Center, on the shuttles, and on the Transportation Services web site. Or, you could visit ShuttleTime online to find out when the next three shuttles to your destination run. Shuttle Bus rides are free to all members of the Harvard Community, including faculty, staff and students. In addition to full academic year service, there is year-round service operating daily between Soldiers Field Park and Lamont Library, from about 7:30am to 6pm.

Medical Area Shuttle
Transportation between the Cambridge campus and the Medical School at the Longwood Medical Area in Boston is provided by the M2 Shuttle, managed for Harvard by MASCO (632-2800). The Shuttle also provides selected service to MIT, Kenmore Square and Coolidge Corner in Brookline. You must consult a schedule to assure that a given route serves a particular destination.

Harvard medical students and those holding officer and staff ID cards need only show ID to board the bus. All others (including non-med school graduate students and undergraduates) must purchase tickets in advance. The Cash Receipts Desk on the 3rd floor of Holyoke Center (495-2738) sells tickets during normal business hours. With a Harvard student ID, single-ride tickets are $2.30 and ten-ride tickets are $23.00.

The M2 Shuttle departs from Quincy Street by Lamont Library, after a stop at the Johnston Gate on Mass Ave. The route ends at Vanderbilt Hall, on the corner of Avenue Louis Pasteur and Longwood Avenue, at the base of the Medical School main quad, opposite the Countway Medical Library.

Accessible Van Service

The Accessible Van Service is designed for persons who find it difficult or impossible to use the regular shuttle bus. This taxi service operates year round throughout the Cambridge and Allston campuses and is available to all faculty, staff and students who have been authorized in advance by the Student Disability Resource Center or University Disability Coordinator. Rides in the Accessible Van are by appointment only. The service normally operates from 7:45am until 7pm seven days a week with reduced hours during the summer months and recess periods. Evening Van Service

The Evening Van Service operates like a taxi service, transporting faculty, staff and students safely about the campus and supplementing the shuttle bus system. The area it covers goes as far as Beacon Street and Porter Square, but not a block further. This service operates between 7pm and 2:45am, seven days a week throughout the entire year, including summer and break periods. No advance arrangements are needed. For more information, or to request a ride, call 495-0400. The service gets extremely backed up at certain times, especially during inclement weather, so be sure you have alternative arrangements or can afford to wait if necessary. The Medical Area provides a similar service from Vanderbilt Hall. It leaves every half hour after 6pm, seven days a week. This service will call up a taxi to take you within close proximity to the medical school.

If you have a car, you've probably already discovered how difficult it can be to park in Harvard Square. Harvard University parking lots are quite strict, and Cambridge and Somerville streets are covered with signs limiting parking to "permit only." Furthermore, City of Cambridge meter police are quite vigilant; vehicles without stickers are likely to be ticketed minutes after parking, especially in the Harvard Square area.
On-Campus Parking

Here is the Parking Office regulation:
All persons parking on Harvard property must purchase a parking permit regardless of work shift or parking location. Parking regulations are in force at all times, including nights, Sundays and holidays. Parking is permitted only in areas designated for that use. Parking in roadways, loading zones, fire lanes, on the grass, or at building exits is prohibited whether or not it is so posted. Parking privileges are not transferable and will be revoked in the event of any application, permit, or vehicle misrepresentation. All vehicles not displaying a valid Harvard University Parking Permit will be subject to ticketing and/or towing without notice at the owner's risk and expense.

If you only drive to campus on nights and weekends, consider getting a night permit. Night permits cost $125 for the year and allow you to park worry-free in most Harvard lots after 5pm, on weekends and during university holidays. Some parking spaces are reserved 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and you can be towed from them even if you have a parking permit. Parking guards are especially vigilant during the first few weeks of the each semester, so don't delay in getting your parking pass.

In early September there are two lotteries for daytime parking spots. Resident parking permits provide non-assigned, 24-hour parking at designated locations for $90 per month. Commuter parking is about $375 from September through June 15 but only allows parking between 7am and midnight. More information about parking lotteries is available at registration.

Off-Campus Parking
So what do those "parking by permit only" signs on the streets in residential areas mean exactly? Simply that you must have a resident parking permit to park your car there. If you don't have a driveway, you have to register your car under your local address with your city of residence in order to receive a parking sticker. If you live in Cambridge, you will receive a Cambridge resident sticker valid in Cambridge and nowhere else.

You must carry insurance to qualify for a local parking permit and to avoid the tickets you would receive for parking without such a sticker. Since changing your vehicle registration means your car will be subject to the state excise taxes and local insurance rates, you may see a significant increase in cost of insurance.

Parking stickers: Once your car is registered at your local address, take your car registration, a current utility bill (as proof of residency), and a few dollars ($8 in Cambridge) to yourlocal parking office. The Cambridge Department of Traffic and Parking (349-4700) is at 238 Broadway. The Somerville office (625-6600) is at 133 Holland Street. Boston residents may obtain a sticker at the Parking Clerk in Room 224 of Boston City Hall, Government Center (635-4682). With a city parking sticker, you have considerable latitude in parking throughout that city.

Parking Limitations
Street cleaning. From April to November in most cities, and year-round in a few, there is a weekly or monthly street cleaning. On a designated day parking is banned on one or both sides of the street. The day is usually posted on signs on the street and there will often be loudspeaker announcements the morning of the cleaning. The city will tow your car if it is in the way when the truck comes by.

Snow emergencies. In the event of significant snowfall, a snow emergency may be declared, whereby parking is restricted to ensure that streets are passable for plows and emergency vehicles. On some streets no parking is allowed at all. On most it is limited to one side of the street. Check with your local administration to see what the regulations are. Often parking is disallowed on either the even- or odd-numbered side of the street. Again, if your car is where it shouldn't be, expect it to be towed and incur hefty fines.

Time limits. In order to prevent people from "storing" their cars on the street, many areas limit the time a car can be left in one the same spot. Technically, therefore, you are expected to move your car every few days even if you are not using it. In reality, this is rarely enforced, except after snowstorms. If your car is still buried by snow three days after a snowstorm, it is easy to tell that it has not been moved. Take the time to clean the snow off your car just after a snowstorm even if you're not planning to go anywhere.

OMEGA是一7，8人坐小巴。价格在$30左右。 如果乘坐国际航班到达O'HARE机场，无需预订，便可于6：40p.m.至11:40p.m.之间在Terminal #5 Door E坐车。 每小时一班，每班在40分离开。如果乘坐国内航班到达O'HARE机场，无需预订，便可于6：40p.m.至11:40p.m. 之间在Bus/Shuttle Center at Door 4坐车。每小时一班，每班在整点离开。如果须从MIDWAY机场出发，请先 致电1-773-483-OMEGA或登陆 http://www.omegashuttle.com查询相关信息。  
公交
如果选择坐公交，按照机场指示牌到达蓝线(BLUE LINE)乘坐地，购买CTA乘车卡一张。搭乘蓝线至 Jackson站，到地面转乘6路电车至57街，或转乘红线(RED LINE)至Garfield站再转55路至校区。Garfield站夜间 不是很安全，建议尽量不要远离车站。另蓝线还可转绿线(GREEN LINE)，但绿线没红线安全，不建议搭乘。

零时住房
International House 提供零时住房，每晚 大约$50。胆大者也可提前在网上与个人联系好短期租房(SUBLEASE)。  
学校住房
租借详情请见学校发出的邮件，或登陆http://reo.uchicago.edu/。 学校住房一般分有家具和无家具两种。好处是不用交押金，而且任何一个学期结束时都可以搬出。 坏处是非婚异性不能合租。  
学外住房
校外租屋必需考虑的因素：
一、  交通是否便捷。学校提供免费校车，租房时请参考 校车路线。
二、  治安良好与否。一般不建议租借62街以南,49街以北,Maryland以西的住房。 更多治安相关情况，请参阅： Commen Sense。  
三、  租金、押金金额。 一间房的租金一般在$300到$900之间。需问清租金是否涵盖水, 电,煤,暖气等费用。押金一般为一个月的房租上下。  
四、  房子种类以及是否要有室友。对於室友的期望等。  

五、  是否附家俱。  

六、  房东风评。K&G 的评风较差。  
七、  是否禁养宠物及无小孩的要求。  
八、  合约签定以前，详看每一条款，再行签约。

手续办理   
学生证
办理学生证请前往Regenstein Library 一楼，100F办公室。学生证是图书馆，体育馆，学校医院，校车的通行证。也可以加食堂买饭用的 Flex Dollar进去。如果遗失，需付$10补卡费。详情请见： http://www.uchicago.edu/docs/chicago-card.html。  
社保卡
首先到International House里面的 Office of International Affairs 报到。然后过些日子就可以带着东西（ 表格，护照，签证，I-20，I-90，OIA承认你是学生的信，老板证明你是他的信）去申请了。 如果你是博士生,耐心地去International House排队吧！如果你是硕士生，先确定有工作 才能去排队。具体看 这里。  
State ID
State ID可以用来买酒。如想申请，携带证件去任何Secretary of State offices即可。 详情请查询： www.cyberdriveillinois.com。

银行卡
如需开户，可以考虑到58街和Ellis的 Citi Bank 。携带护照、学生证和至少两分钱现金，在沙发处等待工作人员即可。被接待后要求开saving account和checking account， 分别存入至少一分钱，得到一张银行卡（debit card），可用来取钱或购物。  
交通卡
如果没有信用卡可以到Regenstein Library 一楼，100F办公室购买$10或$20交通卡。如果有信用卡，可以登陆 CTA 网站购买Chicago Card Plus。  
电话卡&手机
电话卡可在网上购买， 也可在 Chinatown购买。 手机可以在Amazon上面找deal。 一般新开机的话，手机免费或是倒贴钱。如果有两、三个朋友，可以选择Family Plan。  
上网
如果住所离教学楼或者实验室很近，应先检查一下是否可以接收到学校无线网的信号。 如果接收不到，可以选择 Cable上网， DSL上网， 或拨号上网。

53街上有n家卖床的。选床注意软硬轻重。购床时多带人手，视情况可带佳得乐或红牛。如果 选择让店员送，费用约为$40。

食堂普遍可口度低，营业时间短，逢假必关。主要食堂有： Hutch； Divinity School； Bartlett； Pierce； B-J。 传闻B-J有较多老鼠，不建议去。另外 Bookstore 里面有家星巴克，饿岔气了可以去。  
餐馆
55街往东过Lake Park Ave再过桥有一条街的餐馆。比较推荐Cafe Corea。 53街上Blackstone周围有一些餐馆。57街上面往东有Noodles。太久没去不记得在哪。  
材料
Hyde Park Produce：53街上，Woodlawn往东，蔬菜，水果，绿色食品较强。  
Co-Op： 53街与Woodlawn交界处，较小。Lake Park Ave上，55街往北，较大，有辛拉面， 大米，东西比较多，价格也很贵。  
Village Foods：51街与Lake Park交界处，蔬菜不太好，肉还勉强。  
买酒
53街与Woodlawn交界处有一家。53街上Harper周围有一家。57街上面似乎有一家。 请自行查找。另，Co-Op与Village Foods也卖酒，不过品种较少。 买酒时请带好学生证以外的有效ID以证明自己已21岁。

Pub：Ida Noyes地下室的一家 小酒吧，进入需要学生证。  
Lucky Strike：Ellis上面， 有保龄球。

美国Rutgers University & UMDNJ 生活指南

一、 校 区 介 绍



Rutgers大学是新泽西州最大的大学, 共分三个校区: New Brunswick, Newark, Camden Campus。New Brunswick Campus位于新泽西州中部，是最大也是最主要的校区，校区环绕着 New Brunswick市，?K跨Raritan河涉足Piscataway。New Brunswick Campus又细分为五个小校区: Busch, Livingston, College Avenue, Cook/Douglass。由于整个New Brunswick校区广大分散，因修课而异，上课时有可能需在5个校区间来往，New Brunswick校区內的校车系統发达，上课的往来交通尚属方便。
I．Busch Campus
Busch Campus 位于Piscataway，处于New Brunswick市北边，与之以Raritan River相隔；是主要理工科系所在的校区，并包括数学、物理、化学、地质等系别，也是掌管宿舍申请、管理等事项的Housing Office所在地。因大部分中国学生学习于此校区，RCSSA的大部分活动亦在此校区举办。
II．Livingston Campus
Livingston Campus与Busch校区平行并列，以河与New Brunswick相对，是五個校区中，腹地最大，卻人烟最为稀少的校区。经济管理类的研究生院位于此，沒有专门的研究生宿舍位在這校区内，但有少部分研究生住Quad apartments，所以大多只有上课时会到这来，如ESL (English as a Second Language) program, HRM等。
邻近此校区，有一条Cedar Lane，上面的公寓群，因为有校车经过，是许多校外租屋同学的选择。另外，在Livingston旁，沿着Raritan River，有个附近最大的活动场地：Johnson Park，紧邻Raritan River，树木茂密，适合各种活动，更有小动物园可供参观，是附近家庭休闲的好去处。
III．College Avenue Campus
依College Avenue一条街而建，位于New Brunswick校区的正中央，距New Brunswick火车站和New Brunswick downtown最近。
College Avenue 虽小，却是Rutgers一个重要的校区，当中，有每位留学生都必须知道的Center for International Faculty and Student Service，有开车同学一定要知道的Parking & Transportation Office，有最主要的圖书馆Alexander Library，此馆二楼有广大的中文图书馆藏，值得妥善利用。校車的总站也在College Avenue，从此可搭乘各线校车前往各校区。校长办公室，Rutgers Student Center和整个Rutgers研究生的团体，Graduate Student Association (GSA) 的办公室也在College Avenue校区（RCSSA是GSA的一个注册学生团体，我们的主要活动经费每年都和GSA申请而来）。大家要参加的International Student Orientation的大部分活动也将在此校区举行。
IV．Cook/Douglass
这兩個校区，因紧密相邻，虽各有其名，但大都一并称之。稍北者为Douglass Campus，稍南的是Cook Campus，中间有一小湖，四季景致甚美。在Cook Campus 有农学院、食品科学系、环境系、海洋系、农业经济系等等，校区內有广大的牧场, New Jersey Agriculture Museum和Nicholas Music Center。Douglass Campus是個景致宜人的校區，有政治系，比较文学系，艺术系等。 在Cook/Douglass，有两个研究生宿舍：Starkey和Old Gibbons，其中Old Gibbons只住女生。





二、 住    宿




对于刚刚抵达Rutgers的新生，我們强烈建议先选择校内住房（On-campus housing），主要是方便互相照应帮助；在了解了校园地形，交通线路，顺利完成了社会安全号(social security number) 和驾照申请，买车，办保险等以后，那时就可以从经济条件出发，选择适合各自的校外住房（Off-campus housing）。
至于在费用上的差別，校外宿舍的房租，不包括utility的话，一般平均每人在$450上下， 加上所有的utility以及开车来回学校的油费，平均一个月约为$550。而目前学校宿舍的价位，单身宿舍是一個月$630左右，每年会有部分调幅，依宿舍不同而也有些许差別，都包括全部水电、cable、internet等全部utility费用，校内已婚宿舍的价位将在下文中提到。以下就针对校內单身宿舍，校內已婚宿舍与校外住宿分别做些说明：

Rutgers New Brunswick Campus的研究生单身宿舍主要有五处，分别位于四个校区
I．Buell Apartments
位于Busch Campus。为三层楼建筑，一层有四间公寓式宿舍，一间宿舍里住四个人，每间宿舍从大门去后开始，依序分別为：客厅、餐厅、厨房、四个单人房、两间储藏室、及最后的卫生间；皆备有冷暖气。在个人房间里，备有单人床、桌子、五斗柜、床头柜及衣橱，每个房间都有电视cable及电话线路。
Buell因位于Busch Campus，离Science、Engineering、Mathematics、 Psychology各系较近，对于就读理工科的同学而言，当然是住宿的第一选择，因为离大部分的教室近；另外一大好处，就是离校车站近，交通方便；但也紧邻校內路边，对某些人而言，稍嫌吵了些。至于其他生活方面，laundry位在宿舍一角，距离不远，十分方便；附近有Busch Campus Center，內有cafeteria提供饮食，也有颇大的Busch Dining Hall可做为用餐的选择之一。
关于邮箱，信件不会寄到宿舍门前，由各校区的Post Office统一管理，每个住校内宿舍的学生将会被分配一个信箱，信箱位于各个校区的邮局，寄信或收信都必须到所属校区的邮局。Buell的邮局，位于Busch Campus Center內。
II．Starkey Apartments
位于Cook Campus，与Buell是几乎一模一样的宿舍。因为Starkey位于整个New Brunswick校区的最南边，环境清幽；唯一稍有不便的，是离最近的校车站大约5-10分钟步行距离，而laundry及post office都在步行大約2分钟距离的PAL Building里；在吃方面，附近步行约2分钟可达的Cook Campus Center內仅有一个的Cafeteria。
因为Cook与Douglass两个校区紧邻而居，Starkey的所在位置，对于所有位于Douglass校区內的科系或设施，也都在步行可达的短暂距离內，只要经过一小小树林或池塘，就可以到达Douglass College Center、Co-op Bookstore或Cooper Dining Hall等地，春暖花开或秋高气爽之时，最是散步的好时刻。离Agriculture、Food Science、Environmental Science、Marine & Coastal Science各系较近。
III．Old Gibbons
位于Douglass Campus，是较为特殊的研究生宿舍，仅供女生居住。一共有八栋、木造三层楼独栋House，是Old Gibbons的特色；不同于Buell或Starkey，在Old Gibbons，一栋里共有9個人共住，除一人一间房外，9人共用一楼的客厅与厨房，总共有3间浴室供9个人使用。
因为Old Gibbons比较老旧，每栋宿舍仅有暖气、沒有冷气，但是有cable 和internet接口，地下室里就有洗衣机和烘干机，不需千里迢迢到外面去洗衣服，是住在Old Gibbons的一大好处。
对于住过Old Gibbons的人，认为这里的最大好处，就是比Buell和Starkey更大的房间，以及每天清晨鸟语花香；而且Douglass Campus 以及紧邻的Cook Campus环境优雅，住在这里总让人心情舒畅，另外，在Old  Gibbons每天有清洁人员负责公共区域（厨房，客厅，浴室等）的打扫（这是Buell和Starkey所没有的待遇）。离Music、Arts、Nutrition各系较近。
IV. Ford Hall
位于College Avenue Campus，是唯一不提供Parking Space的研究生宿舍，但因校车总站位于此校区，交通尚属便利。宿舍较为老旧，设备上有些不足，以两人为一单位的宿舍，个人房间较小，没有internet及cable，共用客厅；浴室和厨房都必须要到顶楼三楼使用，较为不便。
这栋宿舍的位置方便，紧邻GSE、东亚文学系、Linguistic，附近是几栋主要的教室所在，许多在CAC开的课，都在這几栋教室里上课，对于上课而言，是非常方便的。
V. Quad
位于Livingston校区，原先是livingston校区的本科生宿舍楼，今年起有一些研究生被分配住在这里。这是以两人为一单位的宿舍，跟Ford 一样，整栋楼的学生公用一个客厅，若干浴室以及一个厨房。
VI. 转租学校家庭（已婚）公寓
除了学校的这些单身宿舍以外，有许多人会转租校内的已婚宿舍。转租校内的已婚宿舍的好处是，一来住校内比较方便，二来相对与以上所说的这些单身宿舍，转租的房租要低$100多左右。但是，转租学校家庭公寓也有许多不便之处，比如一般不是很方便带朋友回家玩，没有自己合法的住址等。
※校內已婚宿舍
Family Houses皆位于Busch Campus，有Russell、Johnson、Nichols、Marvin等四种。申请住房前，最好先看一下房子，以决定大小，环境是否合适，一旦迁入就不易更换。

1.    Russell
有one-bedroom、two-bedroom两种，房子较旧，隔局也较小，所以最便宜。每个apartment 配备的家具只有衣橱和冰箱，有电视cable 和internet cable。
2.    Johnson
只有two-bedroom，除房间外，有餐厅、厨房、浴室，傢俱只有衣橱和冰箱，隔局比Russell大些，价格贵些。目前开放十间左右作为单身宿舍。
以上两种apartments有暖气，但必须自裝冷气。
3.    Nichols & Marvin
Marvin 分为一层楼的公寓（single story）和复式公寓(duplex floors)，即两层楼的公寓。是two-bedroom的apartment，两个bedrooms中有一大一小，若是复式的公寓，一般是客厅和厨房在一楼，两个卧室以及浴室在二楼。 Nichols 为空间最大的two-bedroom apartment，两个bedrooms 的大小一样，客厅和厨房是连在一起的。这两种family house的房租都是包括了所有utility，有暖气和冷气。但是所配备的家具也是只有衣橱和冰箱。

大至可以用两种方式?硌罢易∷�
一是学校的Off-campus Housing网站（http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu）
二是到当地中国超市找公?牙干系墓愀婊蛑形谋ㄖ缴系姆掷喙愀妗�(通常每年五月底，六月底和八月都是Off-campus Lease到期的时间，在此之前住房会好找一些)。
至于住宿的地点，在New Brunswick市区，不是没有人住，但非最好的选择，相比之下，是治安比较差的地区，因此，会有极低的价位出现，如一个月$300～$400的，大都是8、9人，甚至更多人共住一栋楼。
比较理想租屋的地点，若没车，就属邻近Livingston校区的Cedar Lane以及部分的New Brunswick地区。若有车，可选择的区域就较多了：Highland Park是许多人选择的地点，因为这里治安较好，且离学校近、交通方便，有不少商家，亦邻近主要中国超市美东（Asian Food）；此外就是Edison、Piscataway、North Brunswick、South Brunswick或Somerset這一大圈邻近的城镇，环绕着New Brunswick市。这些城镇离学校有5-30分钟不等的车程距离，但選选择较多，甚或有较低价但环境更好的租屋选择。
注意事项
1)    如果分配的住房不在你主要学习的校区，应及时向Housing Office提出申请，填写表格，要求更换；
2)    Academic Contract的月租比Annual Contract的稍贵，合同期为8月15号至来年的5月22号，新生的Annual Contract的合同期为8月15日到来年的7月30号。
3)    住在Off-campus或与别人合租，一定要注意合同（Lease）的各个细节，如Utility的分配，等等；
4)    已婚，配偶要来美国的同学，一定要及早向Housing Office提出申请，有很多人在等待分配family house。



三、 交      通




I．校车
因校区占地广大，Rutgers校车系统十分发达而完善。以College Ave校区为主，往返Busch、Livingston、Cook/Douglass三大校区间的校车，对于学生们上学，是极为重要的工具；不需任何证件、更不需缴费，只要看到途经各站紅黑相间的校车。
校内公车路线多达10种，详细路线图及时间表等相关资料，皆可在Parking & Transportation Service -Campus Bus网站找到；同时，每一辆校车都有卫星定位系统，可在学校的http://www.nextbus.com/ 网站上，看到每一线校车的行驶状况与目前所在地，可以先上网看看校车的位置是否接近等车的站，等接近了再出门去搭车，十分方便。
非常建议刚到学校的新生，坐坐校车在校区内参观，以熟悉环境，因为校车是单向环绕式路线，永远可以坐回上车的那一站，不怕迷路。多数新生到学校时，距离正式开学还有一段时间，也大都沒有交通工具，利用校车在学校内逛逛，不失一种方便又简单的方法。唯一要注意的是在假期时间,只会开出A、L、EE三线校车,运行summer schedule,班次亦会缩减为45分钟一班。晚上7点过后仅有 All Campus Bus,路线为College Ave——Busch——Livingston——Cook Douglass，请每位同学注意！
II．一般公共交通工具
1. NJ Transit
New Jersey的大众交通工具管理机构称为NJ Transit，包括火车、公交车及渡轮等.所有的时刻表和车票费用均可在http://www.njtransit.com/ 查到.
火车：
New Brunswick火车站位于college avenue campus附近.经过New Brunswick 火车站的是Northeast Corridor Line，北至New York Penn Station，南至Trenton可换乘Septa的火车到Philadelphia.购买Off-peak round trip ticket比分别购买两张单程车票往返要便宜,但需要注意此种往返票的有效时间段.
公车：
公车站主要也在New Brunswick 火车站附近，路线主要有：810(在Menlo Park Mall有站)、811、814、815、818等。
2. Coach USA & Suburban Transit：
主要是local路线，到NJ州内其它地方，如Atlantic City。但有一种Coach USA的路线是同学们常坐的，从New Brunswick 火车站对面发车，往北到New York City 42街上的Port Authority，凭学生证可以在College Ave的Student Activity Center买到较便宜的学生票，对于进纽约是一种蛮方便的选择；同样路线往南亦可以到达Princeton 大学，没车想走走的同学，也可以利用。
3. 飞机
一般美国国内机票时可直接通过各个航空公司的网站直接用信用卡购买.或通过旅游代理网站如:

www.travelocity.com
以上网站还可以查询任意日期飞往美国各主要机场的机票当天报价. 如果往返时间已确定而且不介意飞机起飞的时间,可以通过www.hotwire.com或www.priceline.com 用信用卡购买便宜机票,此方法的缺点是机票不能退换或改期,同时也不能参加各个航空公司里程积攒的活动.
预定回国的机票大多需要旅行社代理.在www.mitbbs.com 的shopping版或travel版精华区可以查到最新的回国机票代理名单.
各大机场的交通方式:
1)    Newark 机场：
距离New Brunswick约30分钟车程。从机场各航站可搭乘Air Train到Newark机场的火车站，再转乘火車到达New Brunswick火车站。费用:NJ transit单程火车成人票$12.75。
2)    JFK 机场:
距离New Brunswick约一个半小时车程. 有多种公共交通方式可以选择(详见http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm ).最快并且便捷的方式:从机场的terminal坐air train到Jamaica站(票价$5),不出站换乘LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) 到New York Penn Station (票价Peak one way $7,off-peak one way $5), 再乘NJ transit 火车到New Brunswick (票价 one way $8.55).此方法一般不到两个小时即可到达Rutgers college avenue campus.
3)    La Guardia 机场:
距离New Brunswick约一个半小时车程.从机场到达New York Penn Station的交通方式见http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/lgtsfram.htm.
4.Amtrak：
美国境内跨州长程火车，若要远距离旅游，可以考虑，比较舒适，但费用不便宜；不停靠New Brunswick，要到New York Penn Station，Newark Penn Station，Trenton或Philadelphia 30th Street Station等大站搭车较为方便，每日车班较多。从网页上可查询到票价与时刻表，也可网上订票。（http://www.amtrak.com/）
5.Greyhound：
美国境内跨州长程巴士，若要远距离旅游，亦可考虑，费用较Amtrak便宜，离New Brunswick较近的车站设在Somervile，Newark，New York或Trenton，是另一种可考虑的交通工具。网站上可查询到票价与时刻表，亦可网上订票。（http://www.greyhound.com/）


四、 银行开户和申请信用卡




I.    银行开户

1.    银行帐号分Checking account和Savings account两类，checking account一般会附属一张checking card，可以进行刷卡消费，而savings account不能直接消费，需要先转到checking account中才能消费。因此最初存钱的时候需要自己衡量一下，近期内需要用多少数额的金钱，存到checking account里，多余的可以存到savings account里。不过多数银行都提供免费且便捷的网上银行服务，可随时进行网上转账。两种account可同时开，亦可分别开。有些银行直接免年费，而有些银行有学生计划，当帐号存款达到一定限额时可免年费。

2.    在学校附近有许多银行可选择，对新生来说提款方便是个很重要的考虑因素，因为新生前半年一般没有credit card，需经常付现金。Busch student center有Wachovia和PNC两个银行的ATM，College Avenue有Bank of America。因此推荐新生开这三个银行的账户，取钱会比较方便。而且Wachovia和Bank of America两家银行在college avenue附近都有分支，很方便。

3.    开户时请携带证件
护照、I-20、美国住址（如果住学校的公寓，请携带housing提供的租房合同）。

4.    Checking & Saving Accounts使用同一张Debit or Check Card。

5.    有些银行提供免费的临时支票本 (Temporary Checks), 可在开户时询问是否提供。另外可向银行购买支票本，或到外面购买支票本。

6.    许多银行只有savings account有利息，而checking account没有，但亦有银行的两种帐号都有利息，要看存款数额。存款利息一般不高，银行间差别不大：Saving account活期年利率1～1.5%，定期为2 - 3.5%不等。

注意：有些银行对Checking account或Saving account有Minimum Balance的要求，低于Minimum Balance，银行要额外收费。

7.    对于做TA或GA的同学也可以考虑选择学校里的Credit Union。位于Busch Campus Student Center对面的Parking lot内的营业点只面向教职员工（包括TA、GA），不接受Fellowship的存户。而位于Rutgers Student Center（College Ave Campus）地下室的营业点面向学生存户，Fellowship可到此办理。

8.    对于有奖学金的同学，我们的工资一般每两周发一次。由于每次工资都是以check形式发放，我们可以考虑办理direct deposit，这样每次工资就直接存到我们的银行帐户，免去每次去银行存check的麻烦。
direct deposit办理步骤： 去Busch Campus的ASB Building（位于Student Center附近）三楼的payroll office索取申请表填写，需带上支票本，需复印一张支票，以确定银行代码和帐号，亦可以找系里的秘书索取申请表填写。

II.    申请信用卡

比较常用的信用卡有Visa，MasterCard，Discover，American Express等。使用信用卡可以免去带现金的麻烦和危险，且可以网上购物，更重要的是可以早日建立信用记录（在美国信用记录极其重要，直接关系到以后的生活）。

学生常用的有Wachovia, American Express, Citi Bank Platinum Select Card (for college student) 等等。目前很多信用卡没有年费和激活费，请申请前注意比较，了解信用卡的具体情况后再申请。

由于申请信用卡需要social security number (SSN,第一次到美国的同学可在orientation上集体办理SSN的申请), 而申请SSN后一般亦要一个月左右才会收到，故一般会在到美国一个月左右后开始办理信用卡申请。

大家可到信用卡公司的网站直接申请，或者到一些银行的营业点申请。由于大部分同学会在到校一个月左右后收到SSN，某些信用卡公司也会到college avenue的街头来进行促销。

一般新生申请信用卡不太容易，大家不妨先到学校的credit union 申请一张信用卡，一般你在他家有 checking account 和 savings account，并且里面余额超过500的话，都会被批准。等拿到这张信用卡之后可以先用一段时间，等摸清楚了整个信用卡系统如何运行以后，可以申一些更大公司的信用卡，比如citi，chase，bank of america等等。

提交了申请后，一般信用卡公司会要求申请人递交一些证明材料，请按照要求递交。如不递交，申请将失败。据笔者所知，信用卡申请失败降导致申请人的信用记录下降，从而导致后面的申请更困难，亦会给后面的生活带来不便。

拥有信用卡后请按期付款，起码要每月付信用卡公司规定的最低限额，可通过银行直接网上转帐，亦可付支票。如不按期付款，信用卡公司将收取late fee。但如果是第一次，可与信用卡公司联系，免除late fee。







五、 食与购物




I．各大超市

中国店 (一般来讲, 同样的东西, 在美国店质量都会比中国店好，但价格会贵一些)

不推荐    服装之类的还是不要在Wal-mart买了
至于不会煮饭、不喜欢煮饭，甚至太忙没时间煮饭的，餐厅就变成解决民生问题的好途径。学校各校区都设有Student Center，在里面多有cafeteria可用餐，但大都是快餐或Pizza一类；另一种方式就是利用学校的Dining Hall，学校在每个校区都设有1个以上的Dining Hall；通常大一新生因为宿舍没厨房，都必须买meal plan在dining hall里用餐，而研究生因为宿舍设有厨房，不必买meal plan，但依然可进dining hall用餐，只要另外付费就好，不失为另一种选择。
在紧邻校园的区域中，主要餐?d集中的地方，就是New Brunswick市中心一带，对于在College Ave上课的人较为方便，其他的就必须开车或搭校车前往。这里最有名的，就属位于Eaten Ave上的香港面家，常常客满。另一个集中的地方就是Highland Park区，这里就势必要开车，没有校车可达；当然，如果开车，要找到餐厅并不是问题，随处可见。

II．逛街
靠近rutgers的有两大mall，一个是Menlo Park，一个是Woodbridge。都在一号路边上，也靠的很近。Menlo Park 小一些，档次高一些，较常见的牌子，例如Victoria’s Secrete, Banana’s Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch 等， 比较全。如果你喜欢淘一些小店，可以去Woodbrige，推荐XX2等，还有很多不知名的小店。比较杂，但也值得去看一看。
    如果不太注重时尚，对于过季衣服，最佳购物点是Marshalls，Kohl’s，Tjmax等等。在这些地方也可以买到比较便宜的香水，包包，还有一些家居用品。
    如果需要买运动用品，Sports Authority 是一个不错的选择，但是衣服和鞋类在上段提到的几个地方也能买到较便宜的。这里的东西偏贵，一个跳绳需要17刀，建议想keep fit的女孩子们，不妨来的时候带上一条国产跳绳，这里可以卖到如上的价格。
    对于化妆品，Macy’s里卖大部分，Clinique, Lancome, Biotherm, Elizabeth Arden，Estee Lauder等等。Mall里有Bodyshop的独立店面。还有一些确实在NJ的store里很少看到，比如Kiehl’s，L'Occitane等，可以直接到官方网站上去买。闲话一下，推荐L'Occitane的蜂蜜面膜，Kiehl’s的东西不推荐给敏感干性皮肤的女孩子。在这里，美白的计划可以稍微搁置一下，以个人经验，捂一个冬天就可以非常白了，补水是关键。如果仍然对美白锲而不舍的姑娘们，带上一些纸膜还有一大瓶Kose的美白水吧。在Menlo Park曾经发现过它的踪迹，但不知道现在还在卖否。
    新泽西和周围还有一些比较大的outlet。NY的Woodbury规模最大，但较远，开车需要将近2个小时。新泽西有两个outlet，Jackson和Flemington。开车半个多小时到一个小时的样子。

六、 电    话









I.    固定电话开通
  
据笔者所知，一般选用Verizon的服务。
1.    安装电话请拨打免费电话        1-800-427-9977（Weekday 8：30AM - 5：30PM）
2.    需要准备材料        姓名，地址（宿舍street address），护照号，要选的plan（可到www.verizon.com 查询）。
3.    接通电话后，是自动服务台，对方会询问你的基本信息，然后会向你介绍提供的服务。可以只申请一个unlimited local phone calls的服务，其他都不要（若是以后觉得需要，可以再加）。安装费用大概是$42.35（可能会有调幅）。然后会问你如何付款，一次付清还是分月付，然后问你选择哪家长途公司的Long Distance Carrier，如果不需要，就直接回答不要。在选定一切后，对方会给你一个你的电话号码，并会给你一些安装、维修部门的电话。电话开通需要$100押金，可以让老生用信用卡先帮忙付帐，新生用现金交换。

Trick        第一个月可以选一个约$24的package（premium local package），可以免安装费，这个package包括caller ID，call waiting等功能，到了开通满一个月时，打电话去改为最基本的unlimited local call服务，以后每月的费用为$17左右）

II.    打电话回中国
一般网上购买比较便宜的电话卡，打回中国大陆大约$0.15～$0.30/min左右，具体方法参照卡的说明，每种卡略有不同。一般而言，先拨local access number，然后输入卡的密码，再按照提示拨号，（注意用手机时千万不要在打通local access number后按绿色的拨号键，有可能会变成直接拨国际长途）。卡的选择可以等过来后参考老生意见，大家的使用经验不尽相同。网上购买需要信用卡，check card也是可以的。实际上打电话回国完全可以通过skype或者使用msn、qq、gtalk的聊天功能，而且在特定节假日（如春节）不需要担心接通问题。

III.    手机
  住校内的同学可以选择不安装固定电话，一般情况下手机即可满足大多数需要，而且更加方便。可选的公司有    Verizon wireless, Cingular (New AT&T), T-Mobile, Sprint
  开通手机需要SSN，信用卡和信用记录，刚来的同学可找朋友帮忙，或是等到自己有了SSN后再考虑开通手机；T mobile可以采取交押金办理的办法，不需要你有SSN就能开通。
    一般在开通手机的同时购买手机，Verizon的手机因为不用SIM卡，所以不能和其他公司混用。手机开通一般需要选择plan，有个人独用的plan和family plan两种，各个公司价格不同。新生可以几个人一起开通family plan，或者加入老生已有的plan，这样比较节省。开通plan的具体细节需要找代理商咨询，根据个人不同的需要进行选择，一般都是annual plan，部分plan也需要签2年合同。
    相对而言，T mobile价格便宜一些，但是在Busch campus信号不好，而Cingular略贵，信号好一些（但在Cook campus也不是很好），Verizon信号也比较好。




七、 申  请  驾  照





在美国申请驾照通常如国内一样，需要通过Written Test（相关法规及驾驶知识测试）和Road Test（实际道路驾驶测试）。其基本程序可参考以下几项：

I. 考试资格
参加笔考、路考均需符合New Jersey的6 Points ID Verification，即根据申请人的情况按照所准备的相关证件材料打分，符合6分标准即可给予报名考试。具体各项材料的评分标准可查询附录New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission的官方网站。
对于F1签证学生而言，通常所需要的重要材料包括：
护照（Passport）及签证、社会安全号（SSN），I-20 Form，证明居住地址的信件，银行卡等。（所以建议入学后，应尽早申请SSN，Bank Card等。）
对于持相关合法签证的学生家人、亲属、访问学者等符合6 Points的标准也可申请驾照，但可能有相关特殊要求，比如，F2签证者需先去Social Security Service领取一份“拒发SSN”的相关文件，并且考试时由F1陪同，具体可Email或电话咨询MVC相关部门，他们通常在两个工作日内会针对您的问题给予回复。
此外，笔考之前，考试机构会测试你的视力，辨色能力，程序简单，辨认一些字母及颜色等，对于近视者，可带着眼镜测试。

II. Written Test
学习材料：主要参考《New Jersey Driver Manual》，该材料可在MVC考试点免费领取，也可向学长借阅过去的Manual，内容一般变化不多。建议首先熟悉Manual的内容，再做相关练习题目，集中复习时间大约一天即可；MVC官方网站也会提供Sample Test可以帮助熟悉考试方式及内容。另外也可访问州内的一些驾驶培训学校的网站，可能会找到一些Sample Tests以帮助练习。（建议熟悉Manual，今后驾车肯定会受益的。)
考试方式：单项选择，电脑随机抽取共计50道题目，每道题目选择并提交答案之后，即可知道该题目是否回答正确，累计答对40道即可通过考试。如果在考试时出现自己不能确定的题目也可以先将其跳过，放在后面回答，即可视为先做容易的再最后做较难的。
考试地点：New Jersey提供许多考试地点，通常在Rutgers-New Brunswick几个校区的同学一般选择在距离Livingston Campus较近的Kilmer 进行考试，乘校车相对方便到达（具体入学后可咨询学长或查阅相关交通信息）。
考试时间：考试过程中未限制答题时间。
考试费用：报名费用需10$。
考试结果：如通过此项考试，即可获得Learning Permit 并可当即预约路考时间（也可之后再预约）；此后，可以其他符合指导要求的人员指导下开始练习驾车；如果未能通过本次考试，下一次考试最早可在初次考试两周后进行。

III. Road Test
考试时间预约：获得Learning Permit 的同时即可预约路考时间，也可自行选择另外的时间预约。一般而言，对初次申领驾照者，需要练习三个月以上的时间方可进行路考；预约考试时间临近，若想改换考试时间，可在MVC网上修改或亲自去办理。（建议考虑这个时间间隔尽早安排好笔考。）
驾驶学习：练习驾驶车辆时务必随身携带好Learning Permit；同时需要有以为三年以上驾龄的人员陪同训练。校区附近有许多华人驾驶学校，可向一些教练预约练习，目前费用大约为每小时30～45$。（建议如果条件允许，可在国内练习一下驾车，以节约请人指导驾驶的学习时间及费用。）
路考准备：参加路考时同样需要带好参加笔考时准备的6 Points 材料，按时到达预约考试地点；陪同路考人员需要出示合格的驾照，车辆相关证件等；陪同驾驶人员如果是请驾校教练及使用其车辆，目前参加一次考试他们将收取费用约60$。
考试内容：速度控制、遇到信号灯、相关交通标志标线、灯光等正确操作；K-Turn、U-Turn、平行停车（Parallel Parking）；由于这边沿路停车的情况较多，所以平行停车建议多多练习。
考试结果：通过路考测试后，考官会在你的Learning Permit上贴上标签，你可以带上所有材料立刻去MVC办理正式驾照。若未能通过路考，可再行预约下次考试。
办理驾照：准备好6 Points 相关材料及贴好标签的Learning Permit到就近MVC机构排队办理Photo License，费用Manual上写明为24$；当场即可领取到驾照。
（祝贺你，办理好驾照后你可以独自驾车了，但首次获得的驾照为Provisional Driver License，主要规定驾驶员不能在晚上12：01 至5：00 AM之间驾车；有效期为一年，到期需更换Basic License，有效期为四年；最后，时刻注意安全驾驶！！）

IV. 补充说明
很多在国内已有驾照的人会问国内驾照在美国是否有用，事实上各州规定不同。New Jersey认可台湾的国际驾照，但需要参加Written Test，可免去Road Test；对于大陆的驾照，难以给予明确的答复，但基本上是不承认的，因为大陆目前还不是 member of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic，所以Written Test 和Road Test基本上是都必须参加的。
所以，根本没有必要在国内给自己的驾照做翻译，公证等，这只会是浪费你的Money，因为就算您翻译了、公证了，New Jersey MVC还是不认可的。MVC工作人员会建议你去他们指定的地方做翻译，大约要40$，但在他们指定的地方翻译了也不一定能有什么用。遇到不同的办公人员可能会得到不同的结果，有可能就算不翻译，你在大陆的驾照也会幸运地得到他们的认可，如果这样的话，你便可以最早在Written Test两周后参加Road Test而不用等到三个月之后（但这种情况发生的概率估计有10％）。
如国持有美国其他州的驾照，在New Jersey居住超过60天也需更换为New Jersey的驾照；其他具体信息可查询MVC官方网站。

八、医 疗 保 险





学生健康保险
I．TA & GA
享受New Jersey State Employee的待遇，可享用全保险，相当于每年每个人花$4000所买的保险。
个人plan可向系里的秘书或payroll office索要，选择时主要考虑coverage和co-payment（每次看病所需付的费用）。
  
医疗保险可选择的有三个
1.    NJ Plus
建议选，优点是In-network没有Deductible，每次看病只有$10 co-payment. (NJ Plus健康保险计划提供很好的项目，如每年免费的身体检查和眼睛检查，包括配偶子女). 若选择这个计划，需要选一个PCP（Primary Care Physician），大家可从拿到的手册中选取。  
2.    HMOs
3.    Traditional

学校的University Human Resources 有很详细的TA & GA Benefits Guides，可以参考。

II．UMDNJ student医疗保险
UMDNJ学生的医疗保险和Rutgers的有所不同。学校会为每个学生从Aetna保险公司购买保险，每年$75的Deductible。也就是说，你一年之内看病的前$75是要自己付的，所有超出的部分都有保险公司cover。这个plan不需要你在开始的时候就选好PCP，只要在看病之前选一个医生就可以了。

备注：今年UMDNJ的医疗保险略有调整，至于学生的保险是否有变化现在还不是很明确。相信新生到校以后Graduate School会告知的。

III．自费的同学需要自己买保险，所有外国学生需要购买学校提供的Basic和Major的保险，保险
在每次付学费时付清，大概在$300左右。 Fellowship同学的保险类似，但学校替我们交了basic 的保险，我们自己仍需要交Major的保险。这个保险要比TA和GA的保险差很多，看病一般到学校的诊所就诊。也可去校外就医，但是co-payment较高。详情请参见http://health.rutgers.edu/insurance/。



九、 买      车




对于要买二手车的同学，推荐价位：$3000～$3500。当然，是否该买更好的或者新车，请根据个人经济条件而定，但是不推荐价位过低的车。以下是几点注意事项：

I.    不要仓促出手，可以多渠道获取信息，多方考证后再作决定。强烈推荐决定买车前仔细读www.mitbbs.com的automobile 版精华区相关介绍！
II.    大致确定好要买的车型和年份后到旧车交易网站（见后）上查询相关的广告。
III.    在看车前尽量向车主要来VIN号，并到www.carfax.com上查此车的历史记录。
IV.    车经手的车主越少，车保养的相对较好。
V.    被撞过的或被水淹过车可能有不易察觉的隐患，建议不要买这类车。如确实想买，请特别注意检查车况。
VI.    买车时请懂车的人陪同一起看车，并强烈推荐将车开到车行请修车技工做mechanic check, 检查车况并作评估。
VII.    确定买车前请仔细检查车头雨刷左下角的VIN号，发动机上的VIN号，还有车title上的VIN号是否对应。
VIII.    从车行（Dealer）处买的车较从私人处买的要贵点，但是比较可靠，而且一般还有半年的保证期。
IX.    买了车不要仓促上路，确保随身携带有效驾照，registration，以及车辆保险卡。

十、 选  择  导  师



主要原则

I.    首先需要慎重考虑且问明的是financial support，导师实验室是否有空位要招生，是否有足够的funding支持你完成学位，或者是否能为你找到TA position;

II.    接着考虑自己的兴趣爱好，以后就业前景；

III.    多方面考察自己将来的导师：website，老生印象，学术界声望，publications等等；建议直接向实验室成员了解情况；

IV.    一般而言Assistant Professor会PUSH一点, 但你会多出成果; 相反跟（Associate） Professor 起点要高点无论从今后找工作还是事业的发展, 不过你就相对来说缺乏一分应有的压力。 当然这些不是绝对的, 很大程度上还是取决于你个人的潜力。

V.    注意事项
1.    勇敢的约教授谈话，绝大部分教授会愿意花一点时间跟你讲他的实验室正在进行的课题。一般建议先email预约，谈话前浏览一下先初步了解一下教授的课题。
2.    好好利用website，看看教授在近几年的产出，研究方向，课题及经费等。
3.    有些系要求先作Rotation，然后再订导师。学生要好好利用rotation来了解实验室情况。 在rotation期间，除了积极工作以外，中国学生要善于多表达自己的观点，要勇敢的和教授谈话，英文不好没关系，大多数教授注重的是你的学习工作能力，而不是英语是否纯正。
4.    和教授讲话时,最好提前准备好说的话,这样你会更有信心,会留下更好的印象
5.    若是基本选定一位教授后，就尽快向他表明，你有意作他的学生，请予以考虑，因为好的教授比较抢手。一旦他招满以后，可能就不会再要人了。

It depends. The cost of living varies from person to person. Even for the same person, it may be different in different months. What we published here is just a reference for you.



Appartment Rent: ~$375/month (one room) ~700/month (one apartment in total) may be a little cheaper for off-campus aparment
Utilities: ~$30-100/month (one apartment, only for the off-campus apartment)
Food: ~$200 - 300/month (assume not dining out)
Transportation: $50/semester to buy a CATA bus pass; or ~$200/month to drive your own car

住房的申请流程


因住地不同，都略有区别。这里就以校内住房（Spartan Village, Cherry Lane）进行说明。】

(以下过程主要适用于研究生，本科生申请请上网，或者电话联系学院。)

准备事项：
你现在手中需要有：
1. I20
2. 你的学生号码，是一个以A开头的8位数。比如：A33224567
3. 申请费$40+第一个月房租（300到400不等）
4. 申请表
5. 如果想根一个中国人一起住，那你就还需要找到一个室友。找室友请到我们bbs的楼盘信息版。

申请过程：
1. 首先和University Housing取得联系，确定还有空房，最好也问清楚申请截止时间。电话：517-355-9550
2. 填写申请表，注意和你选好的室友在roommate request填上对方信息。
3. 寄出申请费+第一个房租（可以到银行买汇票）+申请表，最好使用特快专递。如果你和你找的室友能够用同一个信封寄申请表自然更好。
4. 一个星期后，应该已经寄到，注意查收email，或者多打电话给U housing询位。
5. 搞定

住房条件：
大多数新生，尤其是研究生，都会住在spartan village或者cherry lane，因为便宜，又可以自己烧饭。 Owen Hall,Shaw Hall等地方主要针对本科生。附近有两条铁路线和一条告诉公路线。虽然比较吵，但是绝大多数人在很短时间里面都能适应。

房间选项的区别：
furnished vs. unfurnished: 一个装修过，一个没有
carpeted: 有个地毯
uncarpeted: 也还好，没有地毯其实对于我们来说更习惯。
renovated: 最为豪华，木制地板，厨房有额外灯具

另外，最好申请15××或者16××编号的房间，这样可以离公路和火车较远。

考驾照• 概述
• 笔试
• 路考


驾照（Driver's Licence）是所谓的PhotoID的一种。PhotoID，顾名思意，就是有照片的ID，这种ID可以作为你买酒喝酒的凭证，也可以在你需要签订房契的时候发挥作用。他兼具State ID的功用。

考驾照分为笔试和路考两个部分。笔试在Secretary Of State（简称SoS），路考则需要到各个驾校。

笔试

1. 复习What every driver must know。也就是考试手册，可以在SoS免费领取；
2. 护照，I94；
3. 学生证；
4. 房租复印件；
5. 考试费。带上Paycheck即可；（考试费可以考过以后领PERMIT时再交）

Note： 如果有国内驾照并翻译成为英文以获得WAVER，你会没有LEARNING PERMIT, 而且身份是不同于初考者的--这样的身份是TRANSFER驾照，那就必须在30天以内通过路考，否则就必须从新考过笔试再说。

东西备齐，只需要在SoS的上班时间(请查找SoS网站)前去即可。你需要在规定时间在SoS完成一定数量的题目 目前中文是40道 错8题以下（含8题）过 英文是50道 错10题以下（含10题）过 。（个人建议 如果在国内没开过车 或者看了一下复习的那个资料 还是考英文比较好 因为中文的翻译不是很地道 而且英文附加的10题识图题很简单）


路考

Once you pass the paper test, the SoSwill issue you a temporary learning permit that is good for you topractice driving up to 180 days. They will also give you a paper thatlists the agencies carrying the road skill test in Ingham county.

Afteryour 30 days practicing period, grab the phone and make an appointment.My friends and I used Mr R Driving School. They charge $5 more but they are said to be less strict or even more if you rent a car from them (another $25 Darn!!!). You have two chances for passing the roadtest there. Other driving schools are equally fine, I have heard nocomplaint so far! Shop around and find the one that suits you best!

Things to bring for the road test:
1. Everything you bring to the SoS for paper test
2. Learning permit
3. Vehicle registration and certificate of insurance if you borrow a car

The test includes two parts:

1.Court test: reverse the vehicle into designated lanes and parallelparking (similar to the domestic court test but much eaiser) You can go to the site to practice well ahead of time.

2.Road test. This test lasts approximately for 30 minutes. The coach will ask you to drive on almost every possible situations (local,residential, school area, road construction, rail tracks, highway,freeway). You'll be asked to switch lanes, turn on/off radios, etc.

In short, this is different from the road test in China. You can only perform well if you do know how to drive (not just having a license).Practice makes perfect, this is good for yourself and other people onthe road. Too many drive like maniacs. Do not ask about the "route" and wish to pass the test by chance. Be a responsible citizen!

基本概况


密歇根的冬天比较寒冷，温度可达零下【？】，寒风刺骨。但是室内暖气充足。只是对于没有车的朋友来说，需要在公车站等公车的时候注意防寒。

密歇根的夏季最为炎热的时间大约有两周。这段时间比较难以入睡。如果是住在SpartanVillage或者CherryLane，没有空调，日子就稍微难过些。

Verizon Wireless编辑本段回目录优点：个人觉得是这边信号最好的手机 因为据说这边设有他们的一个信号发射台。 而且这边有庞大的VERIZON用户群--我是指研究生，所以针对美国手机同公司间拨打免费这一点来说非常有利；

缺点：款式貌似不是很多--也可能是我买的时候正好没有很多；不能装卡，所以不能用于国内手机；

办理方法：这边最多情况是FAMILY PLAN 就是几个人。其中一个人为主线(host)，其他人和他一起SHARE每月固定的免费分钟数。可以加入3至5条LINE，而且每条LINE的通话情况都有详细记录，所以钱可以几个人按通话情况算。每月多少分钟是可以自己选的。包括700，1400，2100分钟等等。一般来说，两个人700，3个人1400，四五个人2100。以上标准仅供参考，要是你的plan里面有个煲爱情电话粥的GG或者MM，则另当别论。
