Preparation of biphenyl from the crude benzene fraction of pyrolysis products. II. Ismailov, R. G.; Aliev, D. A.; Ivanova, T. M. Azarbaycan Neft Tasarrufati (1963), 42(5), 33-5. CODEN: AZNKAY ISSN: 0365-8554. Journal written in Russian. CAN 64:26521 AN 1966:26521 CAPLUS Abstract cf. CA 60, 5253h. The possibility of the use of the crude benzene fraction for the prepn. of Ph2 and pure C6H6 was investigated. The thermal condensation of this fraction at 850 yields 5.8-9.3% gas, 4.3-9.1% coke, and 79.1-82.8% tar. The components of the gas are H 58.8-76.4, CH4 17.4-30.8, C2H6 1.6-2.9, and C2H4 4.1-7.8%. Steam distn. of the tar fraction yields 53.8-57.3% C6H6 and 12.2-16.1% Ph2. The process comprises pyrolysis and cyclization of the olefins, partial decompn. of C6H6, and condensation of C6H6 to Ph2. The Ph2 obtained by recrystn. has a purity of 98.8-9.0% and a m.p. of 66.6-8.8. A high-quality, pure C6H6 contg. 98.8-9% aromatic compds. can also be obtained by this process without H2SO4 purification. CAN 60:30034 AN 1964:30034 CAPLUS Abstract A study was made of the prepn. of biphenyl (I) (used as a heat-transfer agent and in the manuf. of elec. insulating fluids) by thermal condensation of petroleum-derived C6H6. Pure C6H6 from the light oil fraction obtained by pyrolysis of liquid petroleum distillates was used as raw material, and the reaction was studied in a lab. app. consisting of a Cr-Ni reaction tube heated in an elec. furnace, condensers for liquid products, and a flask for measuring the vol. of gaseous products. Liquid products were sepd. by steam-distn. into a C6H6 fraction and a I fraction. I was purified by recrystn. from EtOH. The reaction was investigated at temps. ranging from 600 to 850. No condensation occurred at temps. of 600-700, and only small amts. of I and gaseous products were formed at 750. At 800-50, condensation of C6H6 gave 88.4-91.5% resinous products, and 2.5-4.0% gaseous products, and 3.3-4.6% coke. Gaseous products consisted of 89.3-90.6% H and 9.4-10.7% CH4. The yield of I increased with temp. from 8.7 to 18.6%. Decreasing the contact time to 0.33 sec. at 850 increased the yield of I to 19.6%.
