Dear Sir/Madam:

In the capacity of the former dean of "Kellogg Management School" of North- western University (NWU), I am writing with pleasure to recommend Mr. Caleb to your esteemed university.

I got to know him personally when he was taking the course--Methodology of Management Research (or Methods of Management as stated in his transcripts), a course I taught, concerning basic research methods, especially quantitative approach to management research. Then he took one of my other courses--Advanced Strategic Management. Mr. Caleb showed great aptitude on both courses and he got 78 on both, which seem a bit lower, but if you take the difficulty of the test papers and my strict grading into account, you will understand why such scores are still among the top five. Undoubtedly, he got excellent scores on other courses and ranked among the top 5% of his class after the first year of graduate study.

To my knowledge, Mr. Caleb is not only strong in academics, but also in sports and social activities. He was the captain of the soccer team of graduateschool of NWU and led the team to play in the soccer league of our university for two successive years. He was also one of the main founders of the first academic club--"Management Forum" of the "Kellogg Management School" of NWU.

After I left NWU, he still keeps in touch with me from time to time and I am pleased to see that he proved his outstanding capability in both research and teaching position. Therefore I feel very delighted when he told me he would like to pursue his advanced studies in your honored program. I am confident that Mr. Caleb will contribute greatly to your program as well as he did in the NWU. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information.

Truly, yours

Dear Professor:
This letter of recommendation is for Caleb, a young man I have had the pleasure of knowing for the last 20 months. As a professor emeritus, I have come in contact with thousands of college and graduate students. However, Mr. Caleb stands out as a very extraordinary one with his research and teaching capability, personality and what is more, his "academic spirit".

During his graduate study, he worked as my research assistant first, then as a teaching assistant of our department. Usually it is hard for someone to be good at even either one. However, as his adviser, I was pleased to find thatboth works he did was far exceeding what is called good. For example, unlike most other graduate students who are eager to publish essays and thus fear to take pains to make exhaustive investigation for their research, Mr. Caleb made extensive survey for his in the project sponsored by Science and Tech Commission of "Chicago" municipal government. He searched every possible source of information within his reach and affords for related materials. As far as I know, he has been to Beijing to the National Library of China, Science and Tech Information Center, Tsinghua University's Library and most public libraries of "Chicago". He searched both in library and on web, which is a totally new approach to us. Neither was Mr. Caleb satisfied with second-hand information only. During the process, he also interviewed with supervisors of some scientific institutes of "Chicago" to obtain first-hand information.

His teaching is equally praiseworthy. I often heard his students said that Mr.Caleb's lectures were interesting and enlightening and they loved to listen to his lectures. In fact, he has his own teaching style. To my knowledge,it is quite western. In other words, he pays more attention to arouse the desire of seeking knowledge among his students instead of maintaining a quiet and rigid lecture atmosphere as most other teachers do.Thus you can imagine his lectures are full of discussions, laughter and eager eyes of learning.

His personality also impressed me so much. I would like to take only one case among numerous ones as example. This summer, I happened to have some thesessent to a professor who lived in another university for his review. It was so urgent that I could not wait even one more moment. Then I got Mr. Caleb to do it. He nodded without even hesitation. It sounds like not a big deal. However, it was scorching outside at noon then and it took him almost 1 hour's bike ride back and forth!

Besides his research, teaching capability and personality,I think I should bring up the overwhelmingly strong point of Mr. Caleb--his academic spirit. Although I know that it is hard to define what is called "academic spirit", Mr. Caleb does prove it through his independence on his research, innovative perspective and commitment to academic activity. Frankly, I think it is the "academic spirit"that distinguishes him from thousands of college and graduate students I have ever known. With the "academic spirit", Mr. Caleb is marching steadily towards his career goal--an ideal scholar with time goes by.

One more point. Mr. Caleb 's English is excellent compared to most college or graduate students I have ever known. For example, "Chicago" municipal govern-ment held "International Friendship Month" and invited many foreigners (including guests from Clevend, U.S.A.) last summer. Mr. Caleb was chosen as one of 6 volunteer interpreters out of nearly 300 college and graduate studentswho applied the positions. Therefore I am sure that he will adapt to the rigors of graduate school life in U.S. without any great difficulty.

Your kind consideration will be greatly appreciated.I would like to providemore information upon your request. You can reach me either by the home phone and mailing address or via Internet,my email address is: xxxx@btamail.net.cn

  Thank you.

Truly,

Dear Sir:

It is a great pleasure to recommend Ms. Liu as an outstanding student in our department. I have known Ms. Liu for a long time, and was her counselor during her undergraduate period.

Ms. Liu has been one of the most excellent students I have ever taught. She has always proved to be industrious and conscientious in her study and work. In most courses of her undergraduate study she got good marks in academic records.

During the fifth year of her undergraduate period, she studied under my advice. I was deeply impressed by her independence and creativity. She began her Diploma Thesis from the very beginning----designing the experimental devices herself. The questions she submitted were often original and she was always persistent and successful to find an answer. Due to her spontaneous intellectual capacity and incessant efforts, she did an excellent work in her diploma thesis, and got the highest score in her class.

Mr. Liu has always been a lovely and lively girl with easy—going personality, which has won her many friends among her associates.

After graduation, she worked in Analysis Center of our department. As Ms. Liu’s former teacher and her colleague, I am pleased to have witnessed her progress and I can recommend her without reservation for your favorable consideration for her application to your institute. I believe she has the requisite qualification to pursue a Ph. D degree in your department as well as a teaching or research assistantship.

Yours honestly

Dear Prof

It is my great pleasure to recommend Mr. XX to you for obtaining a postdoctoral fellowship in your country.

Mr. XX was admitted as a Ph.D. student in East China University of Science and Technonlogy in 2005 and is scheduled to get his Ph.D. degree in March of 2010. Meanwhile, He entered our institute as a Co-Ph.D student to finish his Ph.D thesis in Janu of 2007. He did very well in his Ph.D. studies, not only in knowledge learning, but also in experimental technique training.
His Ph.D. study is mainly about the research in the properties and reactivities of XX and XX. His work was successful and the results are exciting. He has established some synthetic methodologies for several type compounds from ready available cyclopropane compounds which include: efficient preparation for methylenecyclobutene, cyclobutane and cyclopropane derivatives as well as cyclopentane derivatives, efficient method for the synthesis of a 5-7-6 tricyclic framework containing compounds and facile synthesis of indene and naphthalene derivatives and so on. So far, six papers of his have been published.
To my impression, Mr. XX is a very conscientious person with good integrity and admirable personality. He is intelligent, industrious, active and self-disciplined. His performance shows that he is a promising young scientist with much potential. I believe that he is going to be competent and be able to live up to your expectation in doing independent research.
So I strongly recommend Mr. XX to apply for the postdoctoral fellowship in your country. It would be highly appreciated if you can consider his application favorably.
Best regards,
Sincerely Yours,

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to write on behalf of Ivan I. Ivanov who asked me to recommend him for admission to Florida State University.

Ivan has been working under my supervision over the last year and was the student attending my lectures on course XX in Fall, XX. He is currently a X year student of the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology. The University is one of the best, largest and oldest academic institutions for Chemistry in Russia. Since January XX, Ivan is undertaking a graduation paper under my guidance. His work in the Laboratory of XX covers that part of Physical Chemistry which is basically related to Surface Chemistry.

In our research he deals with such important direction in Chemistry as the research of XX. During this work he gained valuable experience working with equipment of electron microscopy and X-ray analysis. I should emphasize here that he is very accurate and diligent in his experimental work as well as in treating the results. Ivan evolved as a dependable, intelligent, erudite, emotionally stable person who is able to generate new ideas, to find untraditional solutions, and I can add that it would not be an exaggeration, if I describe him quite assertive and sophisticated. I have no doubt that Ivan would be a good instructor thanks to his accuracy and clearance in oral expression. Also, he has a good attitude and capable of working in a group as well as acting independently. I can say that he is the best student among the ones I had supervised for the last years.

In addition, Ivan has very good knowledge of the English language because for the most part he uses English-written materials (e-libraries, data bases, articles from foreign magazines, etc.) as theoretical support for our investigations.

Seeing his serious yearning for further education, persistence and striving for purpose, I think that he will realize his huge potential and inevitably obtain excellent results in his future scientific career. I also believe that it will be very beneficial for both Florida State University and Ivan to continue his education in your graduate program. Thus I strongly recommend him for admission.

Sincerely,

P.P. Petrov                                                10/31/2002
