The present invention is concerned with 4-aryl-1,4-di- hydropyridines. More particularly, the present invention is concerned with 4-phenyl-1,4-dihydropyridines of the formula:wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R’ is alkyl of 1to 4 carbon atoms, andR” is hydrogen, halogen, or 1 or 2 lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, lower acylamino, lower alkylamino or amino moieties. These compounds are prepared by reacting benzaldehyde or benzaldehydes substituted by halogen, 1 or 2 lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, nitro, lower acylamino, lower alkylamino or amino moieties with acyl fatty acid esters of the formula R—CO—CH2--—COOR’ wherein R and R’ are as above defined with ammonia in the presence of an organic solvent, such as methanol or alcohol. The amino-substituted compounds are obtained by reduction of the corresponding nitro compounds |
