Molecular beams can be produced by expansion of gas from a high pressure region to a vacuum via two or more orifices separating the regions. The molecules and ions in such a beam lose internal energy to directed translational energy with the particles attaining supersonic speeds. The molecular beam may contain ions which were formed in the expanding gas or neutrals in the beam can be ionised by interaction with ionising radiation (e.g., electron or laser beam).
