| The effect of organic ions on the formation of metal oxides or oxyhydroxides can be rationalized by two competing mechanisms. Chelation of the metal ions can prevent nucleation and lead to the formation of larger particles because the number of nuclei formed is small and the system is dominated by particle growth. On the other hand, the adsorption of additives on the nuclei and the growing crystals may inhibit the growth of the particles, which favors the formation of small units. |
