Chloroplast genetic engineering is advantageous over nuclear genetic enginering, especially in site-specific introduction of foreign genes avoiding gene siliency and position effects which made exploraion of the regulation and mechanism of chloroplast genes`expression in viro available. Chloroplast genetic engineering can identify the structure and function of the chloroplast genome by reverse genetics or improve the photosynthesis efficiency. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research.
