The number of sulfonic acid groups are increasing depend on the increasing of content in polymers.Because of the complexation between the polymer chain and the negative clay surface, the more sulfonic acid groups caused the higher charge densities of clay surface, enhanced the eta potential in absolute terms, therefore, the higher adsorption amount are detected.
As more sulfonic acid groups were attached on the polymers, the higher zata potential was found. When the polymer absorbed on clay surface, the sulfonic acid groups-based polymer molecular chain can form a hydrate layer, which prevented mud losing with water seeping, thus the volume of fluid loss became smaller.

Thus the absorption of the polymers increased. The absolute value of zeta potential increased with the quantity of sulfonic acid groups in polymers increasing.
     Once the polymers were absorbed on the surface of clay particles, a layer of hydration film would formed by the sulfonic acid groups in the polymers around the clay particles. The leaching quantity of slurries decreased because the film prevented the seeping of water in slurries.
