High pesticide concentrations in soil from a former organochlorine pesticides-manufacturing plant can result in point-source contamination of ground and surface waters. Effective technologies are needed for remediating soil and restoring soil function. Remediation is particularly challenging when a mixture of pesticides is present. In this work, the effect of zerovalent iron (Fe0) on the degradation of HCHs and DDX was investigated in original, highly contaminated and naturally aged soil from a former organochlorine pesticides-manufacturing plant. The additional of zero-valent iron (Fe0) can facilitate the degradation of β-HCH, but it shows little effect on the degradation of α-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH. The additional of zero-valent iron (Fe0) can cause quantity of p,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDT decrease markedly. Furthermore, the more amount of Fe0, the higher percentage degradation of p,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDT is. However, the amount of p,p′-DDD, main dechlorinaed product of p,p′-DDT, basically kept increasing with the exception in unamended soil (control) during the total 40 days. Furthermore, the more amount of Fe0, the more accumulation of p,p′-DDD. The addition of Fe0 can increased the percent degradation of ∑DDT to a certain extent.

In this work, the effects of zerovalent iron (FeO) on the degradation of HCHs and DDX were investigated in the soil of a former organochlorine pesticides-manufacturing plant, which is original, highly contaminated and naturally aged. The results showed that the additional of FeO could facilitate the degradation of β-HCH but showed little effect on the degradation of α-HCH, γ-HCH and δ-HCH. On the other hand, the FeO could significantly decrease the quantity of p,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDT. In addition, the percentage degradation of p,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDT became higher with the increasing of the FeO added. However, the amount of p,p′-DDD , main dechlorinaed product of p,p′-DDT, basically kept increasing except that in the unamended soil (control) during the total 40 days. What is more, the accumulation of p,p′-DDD kept increasing with the adding of FeO . The addition of FeO can increase the percent degradation of ∑DDT to a certain extent.
