PhD scholarships in nanolaser physics and integrated photonics at the Technical University of Denmark

Funded by an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council, we have open
PhD projects within a new research area of Fano Photonics. The overall goal is to explore
new types of nanophotonic devices based on so-called Fano resonances. Such devices have
rich and interesting physics, largely unexplored, with the potential to drastically reduce the
quantum noise of nanolasers and increase their speed. These properties are important for
future integrated photonic circuits with ultra-low energy consumption as well as for
applications within quantum technology.

The ERC project targets the development of new theory for Fano lasers and other Fano
devices, nanofabrication, and experimental characterization. We have recently made the first
proof-of-principle demonstration of semiconductor Fano lasers based on semiconductor
quantum dots in photonic crystals, and will now pursue new ideas and applications.

Two projects are available; one primarily focusing on theory and the other on fabrication and
experimental characterisation:
Project A keywords: Theory and modelling of nanolasers: ultrafast dynamics and
noise; quantum properties; quantum dots and photonic crystals.
Project B keywords: Fabrication of nanolasers; e-beam lithography; experimental
characterization of fundamental laser properties, including noise and dynamics.

Qualifications and appointment
Candidates should have master’s degree. A strong background within the topics of the PhD
projects is preferred, but what is most important is that you have excelled in your studies so
far. In the application, please indicate which of the projects above you are interested in.
The period of employment is 3 years and the approximate salary per year is DKK 382,000
(EURO 51,200), including pension.

Further information
Further information may be obtained from Prof. Jesper Mørk, jesm@fotonik.dtu.dk. tel.: +45
2082 4576. You can read more about the Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU
Fotonik, and the Nanophotonics Section on our website.

Application
Please submit your application no later than Jan. 31, 2020. The full posting can be found on
DTU’s Website: PhD scholarships in Nanolaser Physics and Integrated Photonics
Only applications submitted online via www.career.dtu.dk will be considered.

The Department of Photonics Engineering has 220 employees and is one of the largest
research centers in the world focusing entirely on photonics. Research is performed within
nanophotonics, lasers, quantum photonics, optical sensors, LEDs, photovoltaics, ultra-high
speed optical transmission systems, and bio-photonics. The campus of The Technical
University of Denmark is located 10 km north of Copenhagen.
