Sucked at Interview
This week I received an invitation for an online interview from an Austrian university and I was so looking forward to speaking to the prof. The interview was held at midnight yesterday, I was surprised to see four people sitting in front of the camera. It wasn't my first time to be interviewed by a group of people but it was indeed the worst one. Most of the questions raised were about my master thesis which is my biggest drawback. I felt like they were so unsatisfied with my background and so became more and more nervous when seeing their reactions to my answers. They asked, for example, what's wrong with your thesis, what kinds of methodologies you adopted, why you didn't use more advanced statistical methods, didn't you have a supervisor who can help you check the direction of your thesis, were data and experiment collected and conducted by you, how you explain that your profile isn't that good? I understand sometimes interviewers prefer to examine candidates by pushing and criticising them, however, questions they kept asking sound they found no interest in my other experience and my research proposal. At last, of course, they didn't ask me about my mobility since obviously, they won't consider me. Writing this post isn't meant to blame on them, I am just curious about the motivation of them to carry out this interview concerning they look caring so much about the quality of my thesis but also have already learnt that it was a bad job from my transcript. I wonder if they think this is acceptable, why they just looked at my past work instead of discussing more current issues like the proposal and other relevant aspects such as the data project I joined last year to get a more comprehensive understanding about me. Conversely, if they think this is too bad to accept, why they should waste their time talking to me for over thirty minutes? I am so confused. Does anyone have the same experience with me? |

What they were looking for is an assistant, unlike the regular European PhD positions affiliated to a fixed project, so they didn't tell much about the info of their research projects. They asked for a research proposal but didn't pay much attention to discuss it while the direction of my master thesis is actually not within their research fields. |

I didn't avoid my drawbacks and, instead, I made a full explanation in my motivation letter and also I explained to them again in the interview. Asking questions about my thesis was not surprising but very common. The reason I confused is that they just paid attention to the thesis. I have attended a few interviews and this is the only one sticking on one aspect rather than taking various aspects into account. |

Hug first. What they really pushed me down isn't the questions they ask but the reactions they made to my answers. Their reactions look very skeptical about everything I said. Sometimes they even slightly laughed conveying a subtle feeling like contempt (but maybe I misunderstood or over-interpreted), but overall they didn't give any positive response. |

That's because what they are asking or talking is focused on how do you propose your ideas, how do you plan and achieve them, how do you deal with problems, how do you draft your discoveries for papers for your previous project - master thesis, beyond that, anything more important to discuss? |
