CSC PhD Scholarship - “Single-crystal growth and neutron scattering studies of quantum materials” Quantum materials have become a focus of intense research owing to the remarkable possibilities to realize emergent quasiparticles such as magnetic monopoles, Weyl and Majorana fermions. Realization and eventual manipulation of those exotic quasiparticles in condensed matter may lead to applications for future information and quantum technologies such as decoherence-free quantum computing. At the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) of the Research Center Jülich (Forschungszentrum Jülich), one of the leading neutron science centers in the world, we have an active in-house research programme on the neutron scattering studies of magnetic order and excitations in novel quantum materials that include quantum spin ice, quantum spin liquid, Kitaev materials, and magnetic Dirac and Weyl fermion materials etc. We are also engaged in the synthesis of quantum materials including single-crystal growth using our in-house sample preparation laboratories. Our research activities are generously funded from the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF). We are seeking highly motivated PhD students to work on the single-crystal growth and neutron scattering studies of quantum materials. Typical tasks for PhD candidates would include single-crystal growth via the flux method and the floating-zone crystal growth etc., characterizations of physical properties via SQUID and PPMS, and determinations of crystalline and magnetic structures via neutron and x-ray diffraction. You will be located at the JCNS-4 institute at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, in the Munich area, Germany, where you can also take advantage of working and studying in the stimulating science campus of Technical University Munich (TUM), and of living in the beautiful city of Munich. The candidates are expected to hold a Master degree in condensed matter physics or in materials physics with excellent grades. Experience and training in magnetism and magnetic material research are highly desired. Very good knowledge of English is required. You are expected to work in a young and dynamic team including a number of PhD students and postdocs, both independent- and team-work are important. On top of the standard CSC PhD scholarship, an additional 400 Euro/month tax-free allowance will be offered for the accepted students.
