In the transition from molecular chirality to surface chirality, the degree of asymmetry on organized arrays of cholesterol and leu-leu-tyr, such as can be perceived by an external chiral agent (the antibody), is decreased. The chirality expressed on the step surface in cholesterol and on the groove surface in leu-leu-tyr is much less evident than in the constituent molecules. It becomes similar to the chirality expressed on the (102) surface of calcium oxalate crystals, whose constituent molecule is not chiral. Yet, specialized macromolecules interacting with these surfaces are able to discriminate between them, under the proper circumstances. We feel that these studies begin to provide a glimpse into the transition from molecular asymmetry to macroscopic asymmetry, one of the fundamental and little understood phenomena in chemistry and in biology. |
