| The results showed that the quality of white peony roots produced in Anhui, Zhejiang and Hebei provinces was similar, but quite different from those produced in Sichuan province, which could be due to the long distances between Sichuan and the other provinces, and the resultant variations in the growth conditions and other factors. The fact that S14，S24 and S27 did not aligned together with their production origins indicated that the quality of white peony roots varied even when their production origin were the same, which could be associated with the inconsistency in cultivation, harvest and processing. |

However, the inconsistency during cultivation, harvest and processing may cause peonies from a same provenance displayed disparate properties. This may help explains why S14, S24 and S27 were elusive from their origin provinces. |
