1 funded research master studentship on shallow geothermal foundation starting from autumn 2017 or spring 2018. Long term performance of shallow geothermal foundation Research Master Studentship supervised by Dr. Zili Li Shallow geothermal foundation is a growing renewable technology to harness the energy stored in the ground for heating and / or cooling buildings. A number of buildings in Ireland have now been heated using shallow geothermal technology, including the Glucksman Gallery built in Cork in 2004, the Cliffs of Moher Visitors’ Centre in Clare in 2007, and Ballyroan Library in South Dublin in 2012. Compared to conventional energy systems, geothermal foundation requires higher installation cost but saves significantly running maintenance as a return; that is, for example, it takes approximately 10 years for a 4-bedroom house to pay back if equipped with a geothermal system. The continuous exploitation of geothermal energy alters the soil thermal field below the foundation and may result in temperature-related ground settlement in the long term as noted by recent analysis. This master’s research project aims to review the long-term performance of existing shallow geothermal foundations in Ireland with particular focus on one or two representatives as case studies. The data to be collected from the geothermal sites will assess the long-term energy efficiency of ground source heat pump years after installation. It is anticipated to conduct a thermo-hydro-mechanical finite element analysis of long term ground response for a shallow geothermal system. The computed results will later be compared against field measurements and observation aiming to provide some guidance on the whole-life design and maintenance of shallow geothermal foundation. Civil Engineering Department, University College Cork. Civil Engineering in University College Cork has a long and distinguished tradition dating back to 1845. Dr. Zili Li is a Lecturer (equivalent to assistant professor in the US system) in Civil / Geotechnical Engineering at University College Cork. His research interests mainly include soil-structure interaction, advanced soil mechanics, tunnelling engineering, innovative monitoring techniques. He holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Tongji University in China. He also has postdoctoral research experience from the Centre for Underground Construction and Tunneling, Colorado School of Mines (CSM). If interested, please feel free to send your CV to zili.li@ucc.ie https://www.ucc.ie/en/civileng/people/drzilili/ Early application is highly recommended.
