The accompanying change in mindset has appeared to lead to a pervasive attitude that genetic differences might be able to account for all disease processes, and that this would lead to new diagnostic approaches and thence to much better targeted therapies. The revolution in molecular biology really took off with the availability of automated micro-array methods for detecting changes in gene expression, leading to the new discipline of transcriptomics. The subsequent expansion in the ability to assay and then identify, using mostly mass spectrometry–based methods, the proteins in a system has led to the term “proteomics” being coined. However, during the past few years the full complexity of molecular biology has been realised and the complex interactions between genetic make-up and environmental factors have now been recognised. It is now accepted that understanding of these interactions is impossible at the transcriptomic level and difficult at the proteomic level. [ Last edited by wangyiyun on 2008-12-22 at 20:16 ] |
