A surface supercell is obtained if, instead of defining the unit cell as the smallest possible repeat unit in the surface, a larger repeat unit is used. You can specify the structure of a supercell by defining its range in unit cells. The new structure will have p1 symmetry and lattice vectors that are multiples of the original unit cell vectors. The concept of a supercell is essential for studying lattice vibrations and to build up structures with substitutional, interstitial or magnetic disorder. When a supercell is created, no objects are destroyed. However, the symmetry relationships between objects are redefined. As a result, certain atoms which were previously related by translational symmetry are no longer symmetry related and can move independently. |
