| Due to its realtively small size of electron cloud, the electron orbits of rare earth ions do not overlap with that of the surrounding matrix ions, in addition, the local electron field of the matrix determines that it is difficult to alter the energy levels of matrix ions (because of the shielding effect from the outmost electrons), therefore rare earth ions are the most suitable (or readily) activatable by laser. |
