In detail, the batch fermentations were carried out in 100 mL glass syringes according to the Hohenheimer Biogas Yield Test (HBT) (Helffrich and Oechsner, 2003). To ensure anaerobic conditions and to collect the biogas, the syringes were gas tightened by using mediumviscosity silicone paste (GE Bayer Silicones GmbH & Co KG, Erkrath, Germany). Three way valves allowed sampling of the biogas. For stirring and heating, the syringes were placed in a continuously rotating vertical disc (5 rpm) located in a 42 C heating chamber. VDI, 2006.
