How Messy Problems Can Inspire Creativity
|

Summary of How Messy Problems Can Inspire Creativity. Tim Harford, a TED speaker, gave a speech about that messy problems can inspire creativity. To introduce the main idea, he started from a story of an unplayable piano. A German girl invited a famous american pianist to play Jass in the Cologne Opera House without rehersal and sheet music. When the pianist found that the piano could work well and the girl couldn’t find a replacement piano, the concert should have to be cancelled but the pianist took pity on her and ferformed the music on time. Suprisingly, the performance was significantly successful after the musian had tried his best to do it. After the story, Tim developed the topic from other aspects, including cognitive psychology, complexity science, social psychology and rock ‘n’ roll. For the congnitive psychology, he took an example about the fonts which was used for students’ handouts. When the handouts was with difficult fonts, the students got better result for the exams. Another example, the pepole with poor conversation filters tend to make more achivements than the opposite. For the complexity science, he took an example for the construction of jet engine. Using the principle of marginal gains, the engine could be achived with gradual development. This methodology is also used for the construction of web pages. For the social psychology, he took an example how to disclose the real criminal from some information. There were two different kinds of groups. One kind was a group of four friends and another was a group of three friends and a stranger. The former only got a 50% chance for the right answer. In contrast, the latter got a 75% chance for the right one. For the case of rock ‘n’ roll, he took an example how to get a successful album through disruptive instructions of a deck card. From these examples, Tim drew a conclusion that a dash of mess, kind of distruction or interuption can inspire creativity actually. |
