Dear Dr. XXXXXX:

Thank you for submitting a Viewpoint article for consideration by Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T). I have screened your submission and regret to inform you that it cannot be considered further for publication. ES&T receives more submissions than we are able to publish. Therefore, we are very selective when evaluating Viewpoints. As a result, Viewpoint articles that do not meet our standards for fit with respect to the interests of our readers, quality of the presentation, or articulation of the scientific basis for the proffered point of view cannot be published.

As explained in our author guidelines, Viewpoint articles are short manuscripts in the style of an op-ed piece, and they provide authors with a venue to comment on an issue of pressing importance to our readership. They should be neither wholly political nor summary in nature. Indeed, now more than ever, we are focusing on Viewpoint articles that express an opinion of a clear scientific nature, based on rigorous scientific research in an environmental discipline. If you would like to better understand our policies, please read the Viewpoint articles in several recent issues of ES&T. If you still need guidance on the basis of our decision, please feel free to contact me.
