Topic 1: Elastic Discovery in Internet/Web of Things Systems With billions of Web-enabled objects and things connected and being available, one inevitable question to ask is: how can we find the things we really want or interested efficiently? The traditional user-initiated “search” paradigm can no longer meet users’ ever-growing information needs with billions of things interconnected over the Web. This project aims at developing a new and more efficient and novel “discovery” paradigm, and a live system working in a proactive manner, which refers to the ability to push relevant thing-of-interest (TOI) objects to users either based on the meta data (e.g., users' historical usage on TOIs) that have already been collected from the users, or by considering other types of information (e.g., the activities of their friends, object connections). Topic 2: Group Behavior Analysis in Social Media The prevalence of social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Wechat provide convenient platforms for people to communicate with each other, share information, and exchange opinions. While users increasingly rely on the crowdsourced information of online user-generated data, it has also become a medium for many anomalous behaviors such as planning terrorist attacks, disseminating fraud information, launching cyber bulling, and conducting political schemes. Therefore, it is critical that we can identify those malicious anomalous as accurately and early as possible to step in to intervene or even prevent the disasters and attacks. Traditional behavior analysis in social media mainly focuses on detecting abnormal activities of individuals, however many anomalous behaviors happen as a group pattern. The project will aim at developing a set of novel techniques and tools for identifying and predicting anomalous group behaviors in real-time via analyzing the collective behavior of users in social media. Both of these scholarships require 80+ average marks in a top-tier university. Applicants with master degree are preferred, and applicants with bachelor degree who have outstanding grade and well-known competition awards are also considered. Anyone interested can directly send the resume including your awards and publications (if applicable), undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts to Dr Lina Yao (https://www.linayao.com/): lina.yao@unsw.edu.au. UNSW requires 6.5 overall (min. 6.0 in each subtest) for IELTS, or 90 overall (min.23 in writing, 22 in reading, listening and speaking) for TOEFL (IBT). The deadline is 28/02/2016. |
