iCASE Fully Funded PhD Studentship - Plant Biology

This PhD project is entitled 'Understanding the role of plant hormones in controlling heat stress tolerance during pollen development in wheat'. Cereal crop yields are adversely affected by high temperatures, with current estimates suggesting that for wheat, barley and maize the combined annual losses caused by recent global warming are about $5 billion. With UK temperatures predicted to rise by 1-2°C by 2050, wheat yield losses caused by heat stress are likely to increase dramatically. It is known that reproductive development in wheat is particularly susceptible to heat stress, which can cause pollen abortion and subsequent infertility. To prevent these wheat yield losses that will be associated with climate change, it will be necessary to improve heat sensitivity during pollen development. This is the objective of this PhD project. It will be based at Rothamsted Research but will also include valuable industrial experience at Plant Impact, a company that produces crop enhancement products and who are conveniently located on the Rothamsted campus. The project aims to establish whether alterations in plant hormone signalling mediate heat-induced disruption of pollen development in wheat. This will be investigated by identifying global transcriptional and hormonal changes associated with heat stress during pollen development. The impact of specific plant hormone signalling pathways will then be established by developing novel wheat genetic resources (using the wheat reverse-genetics platform that has been developed at Rothamsted) and analysing their responses to heat stress during floral development. The research findings of this project are expected to support the development of genetic or chemical treatment strategies to mitigate yield losses caused by heat stress. The student will receive training in many cutting edge plant molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and bioinformatics techniques. The studentship will cover a stipend (currently ￡14,057pa), research costs and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for students who meet the residency requirements outlined by the BBSRC. This is a CASE studentship with Plant Impact (https://www.plantimpact.com). There is an additional stipend of at least ￡2000pa. Applicants who are classed as International for tuition fee purposes are not eligible for funding. Duration of award: 4 years.
