You're going to give up a lot for the sake of convenience if you live here. These apartments are OLD. OLD. OLD. In constant need of repairs and the repairs never come. Demand to see the place you're going to live in before you sign the lease because these apartments do NOT look like the pictures they post on the website. They wouldn't let me see my place before I moved in because "maintenance hadn't finished with it," I should have refused to sign the lease.

Maintenance: Kitchen sink won't drain (I can't wash more than three cups before the sink is overflowing), faucets drip, closet doors are broken...none of it is fixed even after asking three to four times. They also seem to have painted the bathtub and sink at some point, because every time you shower paint peels off. And I can't get rid of spiders here.

Parking is a nightmare. It's just street parking regulated by the city. Office wouldn't  give me a signed copy of my lease prior to move in so that I could go to the town of chapel hill and pay for a parking pass. I moved in on a Sunday and had to park without a pass. Next morning at 8am I had a parking ticket which took me three months to appeal and during that time parking services will not issue a parking pass to you. The city also tickets residents at random for things people do daily here without a problem. Example: for months people park entirely in front of fire hydrants no problem and suddenly they go around and ticket one car within 15 feet of the fire hydrant but not others. Same with parking passes- they will ticket just one car in the neighborhood but not others.

One upside: It's a small space so utilities aren't high (unless you use the a/c) but you can feel the drafts in this apartment in the cold months. Doors have big cracks under them, letting in cold air and bugs. If you set your heat to 65, it's constantly running to keep it at 65.

Mice and cockroaches. Excellent location and some of the apartments are fixed up to look quite nice--hardwood floors, w/d, etc. But it doesn't make up for the infestations. Management is very nice, but very nonchalant about the problems. They do get exterminators for cockroaches but that does next to nothing, since they only spray your apartment if you call and not the ones in the same building or the disgusting storm cellars. Only worth it if you don't have a car and need the multiple bus lines.

I have lived in the Glen Lennox Cottages for a few years to attend college.  Unfortunately, there were too many issues with the folks who run this place for me to continue living here.  Grubb Properties who owns this complex (along with the adjacent shopping center) offers different types of apartments ranging from 1 bedroom to 3 bedrooms with different levels of upgrades.  Prices in Glen Lennox are now about market standard as their rents have been steadily increasing over the years.  If you happen to sign a lease as a new resident when they have their specials going on, you can get good deal.

Unknowingly I was one of them and I got a very good deal for my first year just under $700.00 per month for a one year lease.  When it came time to renew my lease the following year, the rent was increased by about $45.00, increasing my rent by around 6%.  Be mindful that these sweetheart deals will most likely go away if you renew.

When it was time for me to renew for the second time I asked Nathan, the leasing agent, about getting one of their specials that they were having since I wanted to switch units, because I saw the specials on their website.  Nathan told me that he would need to contact his supervisor and that he would get back to me.  Days later, he told that they were not currently running any specials.  I had a nonresident friend call and ask about specials and my friend was told of the specials which were identical to those on the website.  Do they think that people do not check their website?

Minus 1 Star:
I do not appreciate Grubb's dishonesty - if they do not want to give me a special they could have been honest and told me it is for new residents only; if that is actually even their policy (the website did not say).  It is clear that Grubb's intentions are to attract new residents, and are uninterested in retaining current residents.  I do not see how that is good business sense, especially since new residents get sizeable discounts each year, and resident get around random rent increases per year (one neighbor has their increase by 8%, another by 2%).  How they determine who gets what is a mystery.

Minus 1 Star:
Maintenance for the apartments are done promptly upon request, but the quality of their repairs are very shoddy.  I had maintenance come to repair the same leaky faucet several times and it still leaks.  Now that water is no longer included there is little chance that they will fix it when the water bill is not on their dime.

Now many of you may be thinking "Oh, that's just a leaky faucet," but I had other issues that took multiple visits to alleviate.  Additionally, they replace the batteries in the detectors and the air conditioner filter, but they did not bother to come the last time to do so.  They spray pesticides regularly, however since I gave my 60 days' notice my unit has developed a hefty roach infestation and I noticed some bedbugs.

Apparently they don't care about their tenants once they are told that you will not be renewing the lease and will not spray -- keep in mind that I pay for it anyway as part of my rent.  People typically believe that keeping tidy will result in absolutely no bugs; however, it is not the case as the roaches can cross over from the other apartments and are attracted by the crawl space as well.  The doors have a space underneath them that allows large pests such as adult roaches and slugs to come under.  If you are coming home late at night you can even see several roaches, along with many other bugs, loitering on your front stoop.  These critters were not there when my exterior was sprayed regularly.

Minus 1 Star:
You know those movies where the spy rigs his door when he leaves so that he knows if someone enters when he is gone?  I did something like that to my bedroom and closet doors, mind you the maintenance was for the bathroom only, and when maintenance came while I was out I found that they had not only entered my bedroom but also peeked into my bedroom closet which was an uncalled for invasion of my privacy.  My complaints were dismissed with "they would never do such a thing," even though they clearly had.

The leasing agents are very nice when you are a prospective tenant, but once you have been living here for a while you realize that they are pleasant with you until you bring up a maintenance issue with them.

We rented an 831 sq.ft  3-bedroom, semi-renovated space. There were pros and cons of living at Glen Lennox. First, the cons: 1) like any apartment, you share walls with your neighbour and there's a high chance that this neighbour will be a student at UNC. We had a bit of problem with noise in the early days until the tenant next door moved out. Also, I won't lie, we had the occasional cockroach appearance *shudder*. I have heard they are inevitable here in the South, but I also wasn't too sure about the hygiene and living conditions of the neighbours.
2) Next, the apartments are old. That means things often were worn, didn't work, broke down, leaked, or what have you. In the winter, it got damned cold in the apartment and the heater took ages to warm up. The water also took 15-20 minutes to heat up, or would reset altogether, and we would even have to go outside in the cold to the water heater box - sometimes multiple times a day- and flip the switch. This was never a good thing at 7 am when all we wanted was a hot shower to start the day. 3) Street parking only.
