"â ¦an accessible treatment of this crucial areaâ ¦" (Materials World, May 2003)

In light of new regulations in the EU, America, and Japan, polymer producers have been forced to recycle. This book provides discussion on the impact of reusing polymers such as plastic and rubber on the environment.

Timely information on the environmental impact of polymer recycling
Each chapter contains relevant sample questions and answers
Contains chapters on the economics and legislation of recycling, and on LCA
Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of polymer recycling
Essential reading for students, as well as an invaluable reference guide for technologists and industrialists, in the vast arena of environmental and polymer sciences.

Summary: Polymers and Greening their recycle
Rating: 5

We are all used to those ubiquitous plastic bags that snag in trees and bushes, even in previously pristine wilderness areas. In a quote from a Friends of the Earth study they 60% of the world's resources are consumed by a mere 12% of our population in the richest countries.

The authors have used Shakespear's "Seven Ages of Man" as a universally understandable base to shape their discourse that ranges from university level macro-molecular chemistry to papers on environmental action programs.

Other than spreading our garbage across the countryside users have five more socially acceptable means of recycling.

1) Disposal to landfill
2) Incineration without energy recovery
3) Mechanical recycling
4) Chemical recycling
5) Energy recovery

Mechanical recycling requires clean homogenous waste that can be remelted and extruded into new products. This is often used on industrial waste and scrap, but is far less economical on domestic waste. Which explains why blue box contents are often dispatched to landfill by less scrupulous contractors.

Chemical recycling requires expensive grinding and chemical breakdown to create new products that may be other plastics or fuel products. Given that the waste may begin life in its most stable form this is seldom ever cost effective without large government grants.

The high calorific value of many plastics does however, render them ideal feed stock for energy recovery. This could be a municipal incinerator or as a fuel.

The authors make excellent use of "Life Cycle Assessment" (LCA) to show that the popular thinking that recycling is good and saves energy is frequently untrue. Recycling often consumes more energy than can be recovered by combustion, even without including the manual efforts of millions of home owners to clean every container placed in a blue box.

In the European context the most energy efficient option for recycling is about 15% mechanical recycling and 85% energy recovery via modern "zero discharge" incinerators. However, there are those in "not-in-my-back-yard" communities who rely on the false data given to them by "Green" activists.

LCA enables the authors to discuss Sustainable development on a quantitive basis, and thus eliminate what can otherwise prove a daunting task. Legislative and social concerns are also discussed and several exercises are included for those who want to use the text to facilitate professional development, for themselves or others. The appearance and layout encourage readers and the idiosyncratic choice of paintings is a welcome innovation. The long list of acknowledgments may not appeal to the industrial user, but are likely welcome by university and college staff who are encouraged to ensure that they have a copy of this very valuable text handy. Politicians would also benefit from reading it so that the half-truths of neo-luddites in "green" activist clothing can be exposed.

The current hard cover price may discourage some readers as it is currently available in Europe for just 35% of its Canadian list price, but this may improve if and when a soft cover edition is printed.
