Their compactness make them very attractive to realize photonic devices. We demonstrated a "photonic mirage" by the means of such a graded photonic crystal. Recently, we have demonstrated a graded index photonic crystal lens. The design consist to engineer the equi-frequency curves of photonic crystal. Our aim is to fabricate efficient photonic devices for integrated optics. These devices are well adapted for optical pumping of micro-cavity, organic substances, biophotonics, etc. We wish to developp such devices up to telecom domain (1.55μm) and visible domain (600nm). Graded photonic devices will be designed, fabricated in clean-room and characterized. This work is thus about numerical design, nano-technological fabrication and experimental characterization. Silicium on insulator (SOI) will be involved, which is well mastered at Institut d'Electronique Fondamentale. Indeed, "state of the art" photonic crystals microcavites have been already fabricated that require a very good control of the position, the size of the patterns. During this thesis, the candidate will have to design, fabricate and characterize the devices. Therefore, he will carry out the design by the means of numerical tools, will fabricate the devices in a clean-room and, then, will characterize them. Indeed, these articifial materials exhibit unnatural electromagnetic properties, such as effective resonant permeability and/or permittivity. When both are together, the metamaterial exhibits negative index of refraction. From this latter, new phenomena are expected such as negative refraction, sub-wavelength focusing, left-handed propagation, etc. Devices such as the superlens or the invisibility cloak have been investigated. While most of metamaterials are fabricated from metallic pattern, thus limiting their properties, we study and realize all-dielectric metamaterial. They consist of high permittivity dielectric resonators involving Mie resonances. We have demonstrated negative effective permeability and/or permittivity by the means of all-dielectric metamaterials. We have also demonstrated a negative index all-dielectric metamaterial. To date, these are operating in the microwave domain. During this thesis, all dielectric metamaterials will be designed, fabricated and characterized for the terahertz range. Negative index will be studied in this frequency domain, which is a challenge.
