Title: Practical scheduling of mixed model production line for aircraft assembly Project description: With the advancement of flexible fixture and flexible tooling, mixed production has become possible for aircraft assembly as the manufacturing processes of these different aircraft/sub-assembly models are similar. Mixed production will offer the opportunity for automation to further improve the productivity. All aerospace manufacturers are now looking for mixed-assembly solution to revolutionize their existing dedicated manufacturing system, so as to gain competitive advantage. However, there is a great challenge to schedule such a mixed assembly system due to the complexity of aerospace production which are characterised by large number of product (sub-assembly) models, large number of non-repetitive manual operations associated with various processing times, parallel machines, variations and uncertainties, and many constraints such as tooling/precedence/dependency constraints. Collaborated with Bombardier Aerospace Belfast, this project is to tackle the problem by proposing a practical and robust scheduling method for the mixed aircraft assembly line. Project Aim Understand the functional and scheduling requirements of mixed model aircraft assembly line Explore the potential variations and uncertainties in the mixed model assembly line Define methods to model the variations and uncertainties Introduce a robust method for practical scheduling for mixed production line Define suitable performance measures to assess the scheduling Understand the impact on the production system resulted from variations and uncertainties Understand the system sensitivity due to the change of scheduling parameters Key skills required for the post: A bachelor degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or relevant) with an overall average at 85% or above; or a master degree with an overall average at least 80%. Knowledge of scheduling considered as advantage Knowledge of learning curve and cycle time analysis considered as advantage Existing paper publications considered as advantage Time management skills Oral and written communication skills Key transferable skills that will be developed during the PhD: The student will get professional training on advanced simulation software, and learn the state-of-the-art scheduling methods. In addition, the student will benefit from the usage of real engineering data, so as to developing their understanding of engineering business.
