Macromolecular Chitosan is a kind of natural adsorbent of mercury. The modified derivatives of Chitosan by physical and chemical methods have the advantages of large mercury adsorption capacity and high adsorption efficiency. This paper introduces the research progress of mercury removal about the chitosan and its derivatives in water treatment field. The study shows that amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) is a significant active site of chelating mercury. The chela force of chitosan for Hg2+ mainly comes from the van der Waals force and electrostatic force. By increasing the sorbent specific surface area, increasing -NH2, -OH and other functional groups can improve the adsorption capacity of chitosan for Hg2+. Acetamide (-NHCOCH3) and carbon-nitrogen bond (C=N) is considered to be main functional groups of Hg2+ selective adsorption.
