The differences between crystal nucleation and molecular nucleation
Nucleation of any type is a term used to explain a process hindered by an activation energy. Crystal nucleation means a crystal does not grow at its equilibrium melting/crystallization temperature unless thereis a nucleus present. Without a crystal nucleus (small crystal) one mussupercool the melt or solution to overcome the nucleation barrier. For molecular nucleation, a not crystallized molecule must be supercooled until a portion of the molecule can form a nucleus (molecular nucleus) on the crystal surface. The rest of the molecule can then crystalize quickly. |
