Subject title From CO2 to fuels by combining homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems using earth abundant catalysts Advisor(s) Dr. B. Limoges, Prof C. Costentin, Prof. M. Robert Lab and research team Laboratoire d¡¯Electrochimie Mol¨¦culaire UMR 7591 Website https://www.lemp7.cnrs.fr/Index_en.htm Address Bat. Lavoisier. 15 rue J. de Baif. 75205 Paris Cedex. France Institute Universit¨¦ Paris Diderot Description of the subject The search for abundant and renewable energies is an important challenge that mankind currently faces. In this context, the PhD candidate will contribute to the development of new catalysts for the electro-driven reduction of CO2. The goal is to produce selectively HCOOH and CO (a precursor to hydrocarbons and olefins) as well as more reduced products like e.g. CH3OH, employing earth abundant metals (Cu, Co, Ni and Fe mainly) and low amount of input energy The selected approach will combine the use of recently designed, new molecular catalysts (iron porphyrins) with conductive or semi-conductive solid materials. Mechanistic investigation and catalyst characterization based on original experimental and theoretical electrochemical approaches will help understanding catalytic activity on rational grounds, and optimizing the catalysis. Thus, the main objectives of the thesis work will be the design of new, unprecedented catalytic systems for the selective and efficient conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels. References: (1) C.
