Erik De Clercq has M.D. and Ph.D. degrees and has taught courses in cell biology, biochemistry, and microbiology at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (and Kortrijk) Medical School, Belgium, where he was Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology until September 2006. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Member of the Belgian (Flemish) Royal Academy of Medicine and the Academia Europaea, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2008, he was elected European Inventor of the Year (Lifetime Achievement Award), and in 2010 he, together with Dr. A. S. Fauci, was Laureate of the Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research.
