Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Modeling Department of Land, Air and Water Resources University of California, Davis A position is available for a postdoctoral researcher interested in pursuing research in groundwater contaminant hydrology within agricultural landscapes. We are seeking a modeler with a strong background in modeling reactive groundwater flow and transport processes at the field and regional scale and an interest in upscaling of transport processes. Knowledge of unsaturated flow and transport is helpful but not required. The successful candidate will be part of a research team that links field and laboratory research with various numerical modeling tools within an integrated hydrologic framework at the groundwater-agriculture interface. The project work offers the possibility to work on application of upscaling contaminant transport issues related to nitrate, salt, and pesticide transport, but also to the transport of emerging contaminants. Deliverables will support ongoing implementation of groundwater management and protection efforts in irrigated regions. Qualifications: The candidate must have strong skills in computational modeling of environmental systems (preferably groundwater or variably saturated flow and transport systems), and must have experience in programming with Matlab, Octave, or similar and with MODFLOW and MT3D or other groundwater zone flow and transport modeling codes. Preferably, the candidate is also familiar with GIS (ArcGIS) and data management software (e.g., in MS Excel, MS Access). Interest in geochemistry and water quality is a definite plus. We are looking for someone that enjoys the responsibility, independence, and leadership needed in working with a small research team. The successful candidate will be part of a broader effort to understand the interaction between California’s agricultural and broader urban landscape and groundwater, and will actively engage in the group’s data collection, data processing, and model application efforts to ensure integration of various modeling aspects. The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting project deliverables and participates in public outreach events. Excellent writing and presentation skills are expected. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2015. Recruitment will remain open until filled. Interested applicants are required to submit 1) a cover letter, 2) resume or curriculum vitae, and 3) a list of three references with contact information including mailing address, phone number, and email address. Salary is based on the University of California Academic Salary Scale, in accordance with current Postdoctoral Scholar Salary scale. A full-benefits package consisting of medical/dental and vision plans will also be offered. Interested applicants should send a resume and names and addresses of at least two references to: Dr. Thomas Harter, Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources; University of California, Davis, CA 95616-8628, e-mail: thharter@ucdavis.edu (subject line: Postdoc Application). Interviews at the upcoming AGU meeting (December 2015) in San Francisco may be available upon arrangement. For additional information see the following websites: http://groundwater.ucdavis.edu |
