High Performance Thermoplastic Resins and Their Composites By Sylvie Beland Publisher: Noyes Publications Number Of Pages: 177 Publication Date: 1991-07-01 ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0815512783 ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780815512783 Binding: Hardcover Recent developments in high performance thermoplastic resins and their composites are described in this book, and the benefits and limitations of these emerging materials are assessed for aerospace and other applications. Discussions on the performance of neat and continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic resins in terms of their properties and environmental and chemical resistance are provided. Summary: Throughout the early and middle 20th century, thermosets have traditionally been preferred over thermosets for high temperature, high strength applications. This began to change in the 1970s as thermoplastics such as PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) and PBI (polybenzimidazole) came to market. These new, high performance thermoplastics often had properties as good as, or better than most thermosets, and their property densities (i.e. strength to weight ratio) made them more economic to use over many metal alloys and ceramics. The production of many of these new polymers were kept under tight wraps by companies, hence the amount of literature on their properties is scarce compared to materials such as polyethylene or polystyrene. This book helps to remedy this problem by providing a summary of these new thermoplastics, along with tables of data. Unfortanetely, much of the property data cited in this text are from the manufacturers themselves. Overall, this book is a useful text, and a good introduction to the new thermoplastics that are becoming available. I would not recommend purchasing this book though; it is expensive, and being published in 1990, is very much out of date.
