However, it is not clear why Local Moran's index values were lumped together into a hot region rather than displaying the variability in Local Moran's Index, because the authors should obtain an index value for each administrative boundary unit used in the analysis. This variability could be displayed as color variations in Figure 1. Also, it appears in Figure 1 that the administrative unit used in the Local Moran's comparison was the provincial level; however, if so, this should be made clear in the text. While Local Moran's I is a useful measure of spatial autocorrelation, other measures, such as the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, have been used successfully to characterize spatial autocorrelation in the analysis of spatial patterns. An important concern in generalizing conditions over a large area and making inferences from these generalizations (i.e., the issue of ecological fallacy).
