  An alternative method of determining the site impedances is to calculate an impedance estimate for each time-frequency element. This gives an estimate of the instantaneous impedance for any spectral frequency at any time. The total impedance map can therefore be referred to as an ‘evolutive impedance’, just as a TFD spectrum is referred to as an evolutive spectrum. Since the impedance is a site function and is expected to be constant for the recording time, the instantaneous impedance estimates in any spectral frequency can be statistically reduced to a single impedance estimate equivalent to that produced by the stationary analysis of a stationary M T data set.Due to its robustness to non-normal distributions and outliers, the median was used to estimate the impedance amplitudes. The mode was used to estimate the phases, as the wrapping on
the unit circle hides the wings of the distribution and even the median will generally result in biased estimates. We can therefore refer to this statistical estimate taken from the evolutive impedance distribution as a ‘stationary impedance’ estimate.
