PhD student recruitment The Micro and Nanoengineering in Stem Cell Innovations Laboratory (https://web.statler.wvu.edu/~yong.yang/index) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking PhD students with motivation, ingenuity, and ability to work in a diverse, highly dynamic environment. The students are expected to start in the fall semester of 2016. Research Projects: The lab research focuses on delineation of cell-matrix interactions by engineering defined micro and nanoscale systems and applying the mechanistic understanding to regenerative medicine and drug development. The perspective students will work on developing and applying micro and nanotechnologies in cellular biomechanics and central nervous system (CNS) disease research. One project is to investigate how stem cells retain nanotopographical information from past culture environments and the nanotopographical memory can influence future fate decision of stem cells. This project is supported by National Science Foundation. Another project is to build a microfluidic blood-brain barrier model in collaboration with WVU Health Sciences Center. The students will receive extensive training in micro-/nanofabrication and molecular/cellular biology and work closely with researchers in Health Science Center at WVU, and thus being well prepared for both academic and industrial career in the future. Qualification: The prospective student should have a degree (bachelor or master) in Chemical Engineering. The applicants with experience in cell biology and microfabrication (in particular, microfluidics) will be favorably considered. Offer: The research assistantship, which the student will be awarded, is US$30,000 for the first year and will be increased by 2% afterwards, plus the tuition waived.
