The prospects for the utilization of flexible electronics products has driven considerable research and development activities in recent years. Realization of these products relies on the exploitation of devices and circuits fabricated using organic materials. This volume focuses on the development of OLEDS, which offer opportunities for developing large displays and lighting.

The editors structured the book to literally start at the bottom by covering suitable substrates for OLEDs, and next discussing materials and device issues pertinent to device fabrication. True to its title, the book carefully treats the fundamentals of OLED operation, but it covers practical methods as well. About two-thirds of the text is devoted to materials and the remainder to devices and processing.

Readers will find contributions form a broad range of international material chemistry and device encapsulation experts. The contributors make good use of figures and photographs to illustrate their themes and include references to the literature when appropriate. One special feature of this publication is the delineation of device and processing challenges, including designing OLEDs for lighting applications. The book indicates the need for more work in this respect. Those interested in taking up the challenge will be well-equipped for that task if they read this book.
