The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancy Promovendi Heterogeneous Catalysis(V37.648) at Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Several vacancies for PhD students are available in the field of heterogeneous catalysis within the group Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis. The research in our group focuses on the development of novel heteogeneous catalytic systems to convert renewable (cellulose, lignin) and conventional (gas, oil) feedstocks to transportation fuels and useful chemicals. The work has very often a molecular approach. Reaction mechanisms are studied by advanced spectroscopic and modern quantum-chemical methodologies. Current interest is in the design of complex hierarchical porous materials and the identification of novel porous materials. Our approach is to understand the molecular-level phenomena underlying self-assembly of building units through a combination of physico-chemical characterization techniques and computational approaches. Such understanding aids us in the design of new or improved catalysts. Tasks We are looking for 3 PhD students to carry out research in the following projects Novel solid acids The successful candidate will explore the synthesis of inorganic materials with the aim to identify novel solid acids. Inorganic materials based on octahedral-tetrahedral frameworks will be prepared under hydrothermal conditions. Novel inorganic porous framework solids may be obtained by connecting metal occupied oxygen octahedra and tetrahedra. An advantage of combining octahedral-tetrahedral frameworks is the possibility to incorporate elements that do not favor tetrahedral coordination (large cations). Moreover, the increased connectivity of octahedral sites in principle leads to a larger structural variety. The desired acidity is achieved by isomorphous substitution of these neutral compositions. Organic template molecules will be used to create favorable voids in the framework. The synthesis will be studied by state-of-the-art in situ techniques with the aim of obtaining insight into microscopic-level events leading to desired materials. Catalytic activity studies with novel catalysts are important to evaluate their performance in relevant reactions. Spectroscopic investigations of synthesis hierarchical aluminosilicates This project addresses the design of zeolites with a hierarchical pore structure. Crystalline aluminosilicates which combine microporous channels containing catalytically active sites with mesopores for the efficient transport of reactants and products are suitable for applications in oil refining and the conversion of biomass. Advanced spectroscopic techniques will be used to study the synthesis of such materials and specifically the interaction between templates responsible for ordering of silicate species at various length scales. Synthesis and reactivity of silicon aluminophosphates Silicon aluminophosphates are important catalytic materials that can be used for the conversion of methanol to olefins or gasoline. This process will gain in importance in the near future with natural gas becoming a more important feedstock for production of fuels and chemicals. In this project, the synthesis of SAPOs will be studied by advanced techniques such as Raman, SAXS/WAXS and NMR with special attention being attributed to the interaction of templates with the various species in the synthesis gel. Reactivity studies will form an integral part of the research work. As part of this research will be carried out at in collaboration with prof. Can Li in China, we are looking for candidates fluent in Chinese. Requirements We are looking for talented and enthusiastic students with a master degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, preferably with a background in inorganic chemistry or catalysis. You have good analytical and communicative skills, you are fluent in English and a teamplayer. Appointment and Salary We offer you a job where you will work in a highly motivated team. The gross monthly salary increases from EUR 2.000,- in the first year to EUR 2.558,- in the fourth year. Furthermore, you will also benefit from attractive secondary job conditions. Information For more detailed information about this vacancy you can contact dr. Emiel Hensen (e-mail: e.j.m.hensen@tue.nl; tel.: 040-2475178). Application Please e-mail your application with curriculum vitae ( including list of grades and courses taken) to drs. M.A.J. Roefs, e-mail: Sollicitaties.st@tue.nl; phone number +31 40 247 4966. Please mention the vacancy number V37.648 and the project in which you are interested. You can apply for this job before 30-09-2008 |
