Overall, consistent with other results (De Jonghe et al., 2011), we demonstrated that different species of dairy-associated Pseudomonas vary in their abilities to grow in milk at refrigeration temperatures. We also demonstrated that Pseudomonas strains show variability in how quickly they form colonies on selective media. Furthermore, we have provided evidence that certain species of Pseudomonas are able to grow more rapidly than others in dairy products during refrigeration. These psychrotolerant Pseudomonas spp. may be present in natural environments (Mannisto and Haggblom, 2006; Selvakumar et al., 2009; Salwan et al., 2010), including soil (Mishra et al., 2009), which can be carried into processing plants through various routes.
