For the Building Materials and Building Technology Section we are looking for an enthusiastic and a dedicated researcher for a PhD position available in the field of sustainable construction materials and technologies.
PhD position on Sustainable Concrete Recycling Engineered Steel Slags
Building Materials and Building Technology Research Division conducts fundamental and applied research on ancient/traditional/novel cementitious binders, sustainable and durable construction materials, concrete technology, and structural behavior of building components and structures of concrete and masonry. The research ultimately targets at combining the synergy in-between sustainability and long-term durability, and covers the whole range from micro scale to structural scale. The research unit has a unique infrastructure with a well-equipped research laboratory on cement and concrete technology.

This PhD research is a part of a multidisciplinary research project where steel producer company, building materials company and three Engineering Departments (Civil,Materials and Chemical Engineering) of KU Leuven are collaborating. The PhD work will aim to deliver a fundamental research on the properties of sustainable concrete that will be designed to recycle novel engineered steel slags in various compositions as partial replacement of cement to develop eco concrete,and as full replacement of cement to develop geopolymer concrete.  Fundamental properties such as fresh properties,physical properties, mechanical properties, structural aspects and durability properties of concrete will be investigated.   

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and communicative researcher with a degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent. The candidate should have a strong interest in performing scientific research on concrete testing. The candidate should have distinguished him/herself during the studies (excellent grades, publications) and should aim to acquire a PhD degree in the course of four years. The candidate is expected to:



    work independently and in a team of close collaboration with the academic and industrial partners of the project
    present research results at project meetings organized regularly
    write scientific papers and publish research findings at international conferences and in international journals
    have very good oral and written knowledge of English and preferentially also of Dutch
    assist in teaching activities through project work and exercises
    assist Master thesis works
