Preface
During the intervening years since the publication of the Thermoelectrics Handbook: Macro to Nano
there has been an unprecedented upsurge of activity in all aspects of thermoelectrics. This is primarily
due to rapid advances in nanotechnology and its use in developing nano-architectured materials with
substantially improved thermoelectric performance and a worldwide awareness of the importance of
thermoelectrics in energy harvesting.
This two-volume set, collectively titled Thermoelectrics and Its Energy Harvesting, complements two
previous volumes, the CRC Thermoelectrics Handbook and Thermoelectrics Handbook: Macro to Nano.
It includes updated theoretical considerations which provide an insight into avenues of research most
likely to result in further improvements in material and device performance.
The latest techniques for the preparation of thermoelectric materials employed in energy harvesting
are detailed, together with advances in the thermoelectric characterization of nanoscale material. The
use of neutron beams to investigate phonons, whose behavior governs the lattice thermal conductivity,
is reviewed.
This book is comprised of 24 chapters contributed by 49 leading experts in their field. In keeping with
previous Handbooks, the majority of chapters are of review type. It is presented in three sections titled
General Principles and Theoretical Considerations; Materials Preparation and Measurement; and
Commercial. This final section which is comprised of one chapter titled “Patent Basics Every Researcher
and Engineer Should Know” covers, in depth, a topic of increasing importance, in view of the considerable
commercial value of the discoveries and innovations of thermoelectricians.
As in previous CRC Thermoelectric Handbooks, I have served as an acquisition editor rather than a
copy editor. Although some rephrasing has been undertaken to clarify the meaning, every attempt has
been made to preserve the international and multicultural flavor of the earlier books.
Again I am indebted to my fellow thermoelectricians who have unselfishly contributed to this
book and to my wife Barbara who has assisted me in dealing with the unbelievable amount of
correspondence.
