“Cecil was no ordinary cat,” said The New York Times in an editorial. Until his horrifying death, this magnificent, 13-year-old black-maned lion was a “star attraction” at Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, and the patriarch of a large pride of cubs and lionesses. But that was before Walter Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, paid $54,000 to a team of local guides, who lured Cecil from the protected sanctuary of the park. Palmer promptly shot the majestic lion with a crossbow—but didn’t kill him, forcing the hunters to stalk Cecil for 40 hours before dispatching him with a gunshot and cutting off his head and skin as a trophy for Palmer.
As news of Cecil’s killing spread last week, Palmer became the target of “international fury,” said Wayne Pacelle in CNN.com. After issuing a "hollow” apology that blamed everything on his guides, the bloodthirsty dentist is now in hiding, his practice is shuttered, and officials in Zimbabwe are calling for his extradition. Let Palmer’s public shaming serve as a warning to all those wannabe Hemingways who would “feed their egos and fill their dens with the blank stares of dead animals.”
