Yb3+ was mixed as the sensitizing agent in the crystals to improve the up-conversion luminous efficiency of Ho:LiNbO3 crystals, because the absorption peak of Yb3+ and emission line of the commercial InGaAs diode laser have the same wavelength (980 nm), and it has only two energy level and has no up-conversion energy loss, the up-conversion luminous efficiency can be increased hundreds of times , therefore the Yb3+ has become the most effective sensitizing agent in the study of up-conversion.
