Bao, and coauthors at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Dalian) and the University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei), multiwalled carbon nanotubes, nickel core–graphitic-shell nanocrystals, and graphitic hollow carbon nanospheres can be prepared rapidly by using a microwave-induced solid-state process. Mixing monodispersed nickel nanoparticles of a given particle size with polystyrene in ethyl acetate solvent, followed by sonication for 30 min and evaporation of the solvent in a rotary evaporator, gives a good dispersion of the nanoparticles in the polystyrene. Microwave irradiation in an inert atmosphere for <1 min produces multiwalled carbon nanotubes or nickel core–graphitic-shell nanocrystals. According to the authors, the nickel particle size determines the final product. Large nickel nanoparticles (40–600 nm) result in nickel–graphitic-shell nanocrystals, whereas nickel nanoparticles <8 nm lead to multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Graphitic hollow carbon nanospheres were obtained when the nickel core was removed from the nickel–graphitic-shell nanocrystals. (Chem.
