Project Postdoctoral Researcher Position. Department of Ocean Technology Policy and
Environment, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, invites
applications for a project research appointment with the start date at the earliest
possible time after October 1, 2015. Candidates are sought with experience in ocean
data analysis and modeling, but experiences on related topics are welcome.
The aim of the project is to conduct a field experiment of the underwater floating
type ocean current turbine system. The task of the researcher is to characterize the
current field in the potential test sites to evaluate the available current power resource,
and to quantify the current variability for the design of the floating structures, blade,
and mooring system. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to engage in all or a part
of the following research topics:
i) Field observation and analysis of ocean current at frequencies higher than
the tidal current, which has not been studied before.
ii) High-resolution (~500 m) numerical simulation, and analysis of the model
output. The model should resolve scales that are relevant to the device
or an array of the devices.
iii) Estimating spectral characters of the current from observation and model
outputs
iv) Tank or field experiment related to the dynamical analysis and turbine
design
Experience of the applicant in all or some of the following is desired: numerical
simulation, data analysis and visualization, and tank or field experiment. The
postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Prof. Takagi and Prof. Waseda.
The initial appointment is until March 31, 2016, and will be extended, upon successful
performance, until March 31, 2017, and possibly more until the project ends. A Ph.D.
degree in relevant engineering and science field is required before the start of the hire.
Annual salary ranges between 4,000,000 Yen and 5,000,000 plus benefit, and depends
on the qualification and experience of the candidate. Commuting allowance will be
provided.

position is filled. The application is accepted until July 31. Application should
include curriculum vitae with photograph, list of publications, copies or reprints of
relevant research papers (up to 3), brief summary of research objectives and past
