Results from a proof-of-concept study investigating the viability of functionally-active
reinforcement of metallic matrices will be presented. Specifically, the damping behavior of a
model ferroelastic-reinforced metal matrix composite (FR-MMC) system has been examined
through the incorporation of barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles into a Cu- 10 w% Sn (bearing
bronze) matrix. The damping properties of the resulting FR-MMC have been investigated versus
frequency, temperature (above and below the Curie temperature of the ferroelastic
reinforcement), and number of strain cycles. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicates that the
incorporation of ferroelastic-capable reinforcement significantly augments the damping capability
relative to the matrix alone, and also with respect to the damping which would result from the
presence of passive composite reinforcements. In situ neutron diffraction data obtained during
cyclic loading demonstrates a strong correlation of domain reorientation activity within the
dispersed BaTiO3 to imposed stress level and reveals a degree of reversibility important to the
potential practical application of this mechanism of damping.

将报告对金属基增强功能活性的可行性进行的概念验证性研究结果。具体说,通过向Cu- 10 w% Sn(轴承青铜)基质中加入钛酸钡(BaTiO3)检测了标准铁弹性增强金属基复合物(FR-MMC)系统的减震性能。测试了最终的FR-MMC在不同频率、温度(高于和低于铁弹性增强剂的居里温度)和应变循环的减震特性。动态力学分析表明引入铁弹性增强剂与基质本身以及考虑引入钝性复合增强剂的减震效果相比,能有效增强减震能力。在周期载荷中得到的原位中子衍射资料表明在分散的BaTiO3内对强加的压力区域再取向活性具有很强的相关性,显示一定的可塑性,这对这种减震机制潜在的实际应用很重要。
