| The ion rejection of the self-supporting zeolite membranes can be explained schematically, as shown in Fig. 7. Theoretically, self-supporting zeolite membranes have a homogeneous and symmetric structure. Based on this hypothesis, we assume that the self-supporting membranes are composed of many zeolite crystalline layers (L1, L2……Ln in the vertical direction, R1, R2…….Rn in the horizontal direction), including non-zeolitic pores. However, the number of non-zeolitic pores is limited, and the distribution of these pores is random either in the vertical and horizontal directions. Theoretically, the effect of non-zeolitic pore defects in the self-supporting zeolite membrane could be eliminated when the thickness of the zeolite membrane approaches a certain size. Therefore, the size exclusion mechanism can be achieved. It has been proposed that, when cations enter the interior of the self-supporting membrane, the large inner pores provide an adsorption interface between the zeolite crystals and the cations, which would prevent the cations from diffusing. The salt rejection experiment demonstrates that the hypotheses are correct and that the desalination mechanisms of self-supporting zeolite membrane are size exclusion, electrostatic repulsion and mesopores adsorption. |
