The ion rejection of the self-supporting zeolite membranes can be explained schematically, as shown in Fig. 7. Theoretically, self-supporting zeolite membranes have a homogeneous and symmetric structure. Based on this hypothesis, we assume that the self-supporting membranes are composed of many zeolite crystalline layers (L1, L2……Ln in the vertical direction, R1, R2…….Rn in the horizontal direction), including non-zeolitic pores. However, the number of non-zeolitic pores is limited, and the distribution of these pores is random either in the vertical and horizontal directions. Theoretically, the effect of non-zeolitic pore defects in the self-supporting zeolite membrane could be eliminated when the thickness of the zeolite membrane approaches a certain size. Therefore, the size exclusion mechanism can be achieved. It has been proposed that, when cations enter the interior of the self-supporting membrane, the large inner pores provide an adsorption interface between the zeolite crystals and the cations, which would prevent the cations from diffusing. The salt rejection experiment demonstrates that the hypotheses are correct and that the desalination mechanisms of self-supporting zeolite membrane are size exclusion, electrostatic repulsion and mesopores adsorption.

自身支持沸石膜的离子排除可用示意图来解释,如图7。理论上,自身支持膜具有均质对称的结构。以此为基础,我们假设自身支持膜由许多沸石晶体层(L1, L2……Ln为垂直方向, R1, R2…….Rn为水平方向)组成,含有非沸石孔。然而,非沸石孔的数量是有限的,这些孔的分布是随机的,或者在垂直方向,或者在水平方向。理论上,在自身支持沸石膜中非沸石孔的不良影响在沸石膜达到一定厚度时可以消除。因此可以实现尺寸排阻的机质。一般认为,当阳离子进入自身支持沸石膜内部时,内部的大孔在沸石晶体和阳离子之间构成一个吸附界面,可以避免阳离子扩散。盐排除实验表明这种假设是对的,自身支持沸石膜的脱盐机理就是尺寸排阻、经典排斥和间孔吸附。
